Former Ghana head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has been named Coach of the Season in Kenya after leading Kenyan giants Gor Mahia to the FKF Premier League title in a campaign that underlined the club’s domestic dominance.
Akonnor’s recognition comes after a successful season in which he steered K’Ogalo to a record-extending 22nd league championship, reaffirming their status as the most decorated side in Kenyan football history. His tactical approach and squad management were widely credited with stabilising the team during a tightly contested title race.
Gor Mahia were officially crowned champions on the final day of the season, despite ending their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Nairobi United at Nyayo National Stadium. The result did not prevent celebrations, as their rivals were unable to match their points tally across the season.
The title presentation ceremony drew significant attention, with Kenya national team captain Michael Olunga returning to honour his former club. Olunga, a product of Gor Mahia’s system and one of Kenya’s most prominent football exports, presented the league trophy to the players in front of a packed stadium.
The triumph ensures Gor Mahia will once again represent Kenya in the CAF Champions League, providing another opportunity to test themselves against Africa’s elite clubs.
Alongside continental qualification, the club is expected to receive approximately KSh15 million (around $116,000) in prize money.
For Akonnor, the Coach of the Season award marks a significant milestone in his managerial career. The former Black Stars boss, who took over at Gor Mahia amid high expectations, has now delivered silverware in his debut campaign in Kenyan football, further enhancing his reputation on the continent.
His achievement has been widely praised within Kenyan football circles, particularly given the pressure of managing a club with such strong expectations and an intense fanbase.
The FKF Premier League title adds another chapter to Gor Mahia’s long history of success in domestic football, while also raising expectations ahead of their return to continental competition next season.
As celebrations continue in Nairobi, attention will soon shift to squad planning and preparations for the CAF Champions League campaign, where Akonnor’s side will look to carry their domestic momentum onto a bigger stage.
