Mamelodi Sundowns open contract talks with Miguel Cardoso after CAF Champions League triumph

Mamelodi Sundowns FC have reportedly begun discussions over a new contract for head coach Miguel Cardoso following the club’s CAF Champions League success.

The Pretoria giants are still celebrating after defeating AS FAR in Morocco to secure African club football’s biggest prize and claim another historic continental title.

Speaking after the triumph, Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe confirmed that discussions with Cardoso are already taking place, while hinting that negotiations are progressing positively.

“I believe that where the club is heading right now is in a positive direction, and we will obviously go into the next few months now and have discussions, but definitely the discussions are already in a much more positive position than when we had discussions before the coach even joined the club,” Motsepe said.

His comments strongly suggest that Sundowns are determined to retain the Portuguese tactician after his impressive impact since arriving at the club.

Cardoso has quickly strengthened his reputation by guiding Sundowns to continental glory while maintaining the high standards expected at one of Africa’s biggest football institutions.

The latest CAF Champions League triumph also reinforced Sundowns’ status among the continent’s elite. The title marked the club’s second Champions League crown in a decade following their historic first success under Pitso Mosimane in 2016.

That earlier triumph helped transform Sundowns into a respected African powerhouse, while the latest success confirms the club’s long-term consistency at the highest level.

Club officials are now expected to prioritise stability within the technical setup as Sundowns prepare for future domestic competitions, continental title defences and possible appearances on the global stage.
