Burkina Faso and Mali play out stalemate in Women’s AFCON warm-up derby

Burkina Faso and Mali continued their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a goalless draw in a friendly international played in Ouagadougou on Thursday.

The West African rivals could not be separated in the first of two scheduled warm-up matches, as both sides produced disciplined defensive displays but failed to find the breakthrough at the Stade du 4 Août.

The fixture formed part of both nations’ build-up to the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, with coaches using the encounter to assess their squads and fine-tune tactical plans ahead of the continental showpiece.

Despite the absence of goals, the match provided a competitive test for two teams eager to arrive at the tournament in peak condition.

The derby atmosphere brought intensity to proceedings, with neither side willing to concede ground in a contest that reflected the growing competitiveness of women’s football in West Africa.

The home supporters in Ouagadougou witnessed a closely fought encounter in which chances were limited and defensive organisation took centre stage.

Burkina Faso, under head coach Pascal Sawadogo, demonstrated resilience at the back, while Mali matched their hosts with an equally disciplined performance.

Although both teams pushed for a winner, neither was able to convert opportunities into goals, leaving the contest deadlocked at full time.

For Burkina Faso, the match offered another opportunity to continue building cohesion within the squad ahead of the Women’s AFCON. The Stallions Ladies will be encouraged by their defensive solidity, even if improvements are still required in attack.

Mali’s Eagles Ladies can also take positives from the result. Keeping a clean sheet away from home against a regional rival provides a platform on which the coaching staff can continue to build as preparations intensify.

The result means there is still everything to play for when the two teams meet again in the second and final friendly of the series.

The return fixture is scheduled to take place on 7 June at the same venue in Ouagadougou, giving both coaches another valuable opportunity to evaluate players and make further adjustments before the start of the continental tournament.

With the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations approaching, matches such as these are expected to play a crucial role in helping teams sharpen their tactics, improve fitness levels, and strengthen squad chemistry.
