Mali ended their 2025-26 international campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Iran in a friendly match played in Antalya, Turkey, as the West African side continues to navigate uncertainty over its coaching situation ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Eagles, led by interim coach Badra Alou Diallo, were beaten by a well-organised Iranian side preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result extended Mali’s winless run to three matches and highlighted areas the team must address before returning to competitive action later this year.
Played at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya, the intercontinental friendly offered both teams an opportunity to assess their squads ahead of future challenges.
For Iran, ranked 21st in the world, it was another step in their preparations for football’s biggest tournament. For Mali, ranked 52nd, it marked the conclusion of an international season that has produced mixed results.
Mali entered the contest without several key players. Hamari Traoré, Amadou Danté, Mohamed Camara, Soumaila Diabaté and Lassine Sinayoko were all unavailable due to a combination of injuries, illness and administrative issues.
Those absences proved costly against a disciplined Iranian side that took control of the match early.
Saeid Ezatolahi opened the scoring in the 12th minute, giving Team Melli a lead they would hold until the interval.
Despite showing determination and commitment throughout the contest, Mali struggled to create clear-cut opportunities in attack.
Their efforts to find an equaliser were further complicated when Ramin Rezaeian doubled Iran’s advantage in the 55th minute, putting the match beyond the reach of the Eagles.
The result reflected the gap between the two teams in the FIFA rankings, but it also provided valuable lessons for Mali’s coaching staff as they continue to evaluate the squad.
Thursday’s defeat means Mali have now gone three matches without a victory.
Their last competitive outing ended in disappointment when they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 defeat to eventual champions Senegal on 9 January.
The Eagles then played out a goalless draw against Russia on 31 March before suffering defeat against Iran.
While the latest result is a setback, the match also offered an opportunity for Mali to assess their depth and identify areas for improvement.
Attacking efficiency emerged as one of the key concerns, with the team unable to convert possession and promising moments into goals.
Attention will now shift to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins in September.
The qualifiers will determine which nations advance to the tournament scheduled to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from 19 June to 18 July 2027.
