Egyptian giants Al Ahly have launched a sweeping restructuring of their football operations, making major changes across the club as they seek to restore dominance ahead of a crucial new season.
The overhaul comes shortly after the departure of head coach Jess Thorup, with general coach Adel Mustafa and football director Walid Salah El Din also leaving their roles.
The changes, approved by club president Mahmoud El-Khatib and the board, signal a clear determination to rebuild the club’s football structure from top to bottom rather than relying on minor adjustments.
At the heart of the shake-up is the appointment of club legend Wael Gomaa as the new football director. One of the most decorated figures in the club’s history, Gomaa now takes on one of the most influential positions within Al Ahly’s football hierarchy.
The board has also reshaped several key departments. Mohamed Youssef will oversee the youth sector, while Essam Serag El-Din takes charge of player contracts and negotiations.
In the women’s game, Shadi Mohamed has been appointed director of women’s football, with Ahmed Ramadan assuming technical leadership responsibilities.
Additional appointments include Hisham Hanafi as supervisor of the Delphi team and Samer Abdel Rahman as its technical director, while African football icon Abdel Moneim Shatta has been handed responsibility for overseeing academy operations.
The restructuring reflects a broader vision to modernise Al Ahly’s football ecosystem by placing experienced former players and trusted administrators in strategic positions throughout the club.
With domestic honours and continental success always expected at Al Ahly, the pressure will now be on the new leadership team to justify the board’s bold decisions.
Supporters will hope the extensive changes provide the fresh direction needed to return the club to the summit of African football and strengthen their challenge for future continental titles.
