World Cup 2026: How Neil El Aynaoui became Morocco’s new midfield engine

The journey of Neil El Aynaoui to becoming one of Morocco’s most influential midfielders has been anything but conventional.

The 24-year-old has emerged as one of the standout performers for the Atlas Lions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after establishing himself as a key figure during Morocco’s victorious 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

His consistent displays have continued in North America, where Morocco progressed from the group stage after collecting seven points from matches against Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.

For African football, El Aynaoui’s rise represents another success story from a generation of Moroccan players continuing to elevate the country’s status on the global stage. Having reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar four years earlier, Morocco now possesses a squad combining experience with a new wave of emerging talent, and El Aynaoui has become one of its central figures.

Born in Nancy, France, in 2001, El Aynaoui grew up in a family deeply connected to sport. His father, Younes El Aynaoui, was a former top-level Moroccan tennis player from Rabat, while his mother also competed in tennis.

Although football eventually became his chosen path, he spent much of his childhood balancing the two sports before fully committing to football after receiving his first call-up to Nancy’s reserve side at the age of 17.

A brief period living near Barcelona also influenced his development, with the midfielder drawing inspiration from legendary Spanish playmaker Andrés Iniesta.

El Aynaoui progressed through the academy at AS Nancy Lorraine before signing his first professional contract ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

He made his senior debut against Toulouse and later scored his first professional goal against Paris FC, finishing the season with 28 Ligue 2 appearances, two goals and one assist.

Even after Nancy suffered relegation, the midfielder remained with the club and played an increasingly important role.

During the following campaign in France’s third division, he featured in 34 matches, scored four goals, provided two assists and was handed the captain’s armband despite his young age.

His tireless work rate, tactical awareness and leadership qualities soon attracted the attention of RC Lens.

A move to the Ligue 1 side followed in June 2023, where El Aynaoui continued his steady development.

His first season brought 31 appearances, one goal and two assists before he enjoyed a significant breakthrough the following year.

Despite not always starting matches, he scored eight goals in just 25 appearances while becoming one of Lens’ most influential midfielders.

European football also accelerated his progress.

Although Lens exited both the UEFA Champions League group stage and the UEFA Europa League round of 16, those experiences helped prepare him for another major step in his career.

That opportunity arrived when he completed a €23.5 million transfer to Italian side AS Roma, signing a five-year contract.

Initially used as part of the squad rotation, El Aynaoui gradually established himself during the 2025-26 season.

He finished the campaign with 34 appearances across all competitions while recording an impressive 89% pass completion rate.

Competition for places alongside midfielders such as Manu Koné and Niccolò Pisilli remained fierce, but the Moroccan continued to strengthen his reputation as a dependable box-to-box midfielder capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch.

Internationally, El Aynaoui initially faced a decision between representing France and Morocco before committing to the Atlas Lions.

After first featuring at Olympic level, he quickly became an important player for the senior national team under Walid Regragui and has maintained that status under Mohamed Ouahbi.

Since making his senior debut against Niger in September 2025, he has earned 19 international caps and scored twice in friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay.

His influence became especially evident during Morocco’s triumphant AFCON campaign, where he played every minute of the team’s 690-minute journey to the title.

That momentum has continued into the World Cup, with El Aynaoui establishing himself as one of the leaders in Morocco’s midfield.

Known for his relentless energy, ability to regain possession and accuracy in distributing the ball, he combines defensive discipline with the technical quality needed to launch attacks.

His passing accuracy has remained above 90% during major tournaments, highlighting both his consistency and importance to Morocco’s style of play.

There is still room for improvement.

His aggressive approach can occasionally result in unnecessary fouls, while maintaining his intensity throughout matches remains an area to refine.

Even so, El Aynaoui has already developed into one of Morocco’s key players.
