Onana set for Trabzonspor return as Manchester United prepare fresh loan move

Cameroon international André Onana is set to return to Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, in a move that could offer the goalkeeper a fresh opportunity to revive his career away from Manchester United.

The 30-year-old is expected to rejoin the Süper Lig club after a successful loan spell, with Manchester United continuing to pay part of his salary as part of the agreement.

The proposed move would see Onana remain in Turkey until the end of the season despite being under contract at Old Trafford until June 2028.

For one of Africa’s most accomplished goalkeepers, the deal represents another chance to rebuild momentum after slipping down the pecking order at Manchester United.

Onana enjoyed a productive spell with Trabzonspor, where he established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and became a favourite among supporters through a series of impressive displays.

His performances helped the Turkish side secure a top-three finish in the Süper Lig while also contributing to success in domestic cup competition.

Club officials are understood to have made retaining the Cameroon international a priority after the season ended, believing his experience, leadership and familiarity with the squad would be valuable as they prepare to compete domestically and in Europe.

A return also means Onana would avoid the adjustment period that often accompanies a move to a new club, having already adapted to Turkish football and the expectations at Trabzonspor.

The latest development also reflects Manchester United’s evolving plans.

The Premier League club signed Onana from Inter Milan in 2023 for a reported fee of around £47 million, hoping he would become the long-term successor to David de Gea.

However, his time at Old Trafford has been marked by inconsistency.

Despite showing flashes of the qualities that made him one of Europe’s most highly rated goalkeepers during spells with Ajax and Inter Milan, a series of costly errors across multiple competitions attracted criticism from supporters and pundits.

Those performances have reportedly convinced the club that Onana is no longer part of its long-term project.

The emergence of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens has further reduced the Cameroonian’s chances of reclaiming the number-one shirt.

Manchester United are also believed to be reshaping their squad as they prepare to compete in both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, with several changes expected during the summer transfer window.

For Onana, another season in Turkey could provide the regular football needed to regain confidence and maintain his standing as one of Africa’s leading goalkeepers.

Returning to an environment where he has already succeeded may also help him rediscover the consistency that established him as a key figure for both club and country.

The move appears to suit all parties.

Trabzonspor retain a goalkeeper who has already proven his value, while Manchester United create space for their evolving squad without permanently parting ways with the Cameroonian.

For African football, the transfer offers one of the continent’s most experienced internationals another opportunity to perform regularly at club level ahead of future international commitments.

If completed, the loan will mark another chapter in Onana’s career, with Trabzonspor once again becoming the stage on which he looks to rebuild his reputation after a difficult spell in England.
