Egypt forward Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet is on the verge of leaving Al Ahly SC for a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Riyadh, with negotiations between the clubs reaching an advanced stage during the current summer transfer window.
The 31-year-old, who is currently representing Egypt national football team at the 2026 World Cup, is understood to be only one step away from completing the transfer after Al Ahly agreed to his departure following discussions with the Saudi club.
Although the deal has not yet been finalised, sources indicate that only personal terms between the player and Al-Riyadh remain unresolved, placing the transfer close to completion.
Al Ahly Approves Departure After Talks
According to a source within Al Ahly, club officials informed Al-Riyadh that they had accepted the proposal for Trezeguet’s transfer after negotiations that continued for almost a week.
The source said: “Al-Ahly will let Trezeguet go to Al-Riyadh, and all that remains is for the player to agree with the club on the details of his contract, which includes the duration and some conditions related to staying in the Saudi league.”
The development marks a significant step in what has become one of the most closely watched transfer stories involving an Egyptian player this summer.
While the clubs appear to have reached common ground, discussions are continuing regarding the player’s individual contract. Those talks are expected to focus on the length of the agreement and several conditions connected to his proposed stay in Saudi Arabia.
The source added: “So far, no final agreement has been reached between the player’s representatives and the Saudi club, but things are very close.”
Decision Expected After World Cup Campaign
Trezeguet’s immediate focus remains on international duty as Egypt prepare for their final Group G fixture against Iran at the World Cup being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The tournament runs until 19 July, and the Egyptian winger is expected to postpone any final decision regarding his future until the national team’s campaign comes to an end.
According to the source, the player intends to assess the situation fully after completing his World Cup commitments before making a definitive choice on whether to continue his career in Saudi Arabia.
The timing means that while negotiations are progressing behind the scenes, no official announcement is expected until after Egypt’s participation in the tournament has concluded.
A Short Stay at Al Ahly Could Be Ending
Trezeguet returned to Al Ahly in the summer of 2025 after joining from Turkish club Trabzonspor on a five-year contract.
His arrival was viewed as a major acquisition for the Cairo club, given his experience in European football and his status as a key player for Egypt.
However, less than a year after his return, the possibility of a move away from the club has emerged following interest from Al-Riyadh.
Reports had previously revealed that the Saudi side submitted an offer to sign the winger during the current transfer window, and negotiations have since accelerated.
Emotional Impact of Potential Exit
The prospect of leaving Al Ahly has reportedly been difficult for the player.
Sources close to Trezeguet indicated that he has been deeply saddened by the club’s decision to approve his departure. According to those reports, the Egypt international had hoped to spend the remainder of his playing career at Al Ahly and eventually retire while representing the club.
That emotional attachment has made the decision more complex despite the advanced state of negotiations.
For now, Trezeguet remains focused on Egypt’s World Cup challenge, but with Al Ahly having approved the transfer and talks with Al-Riyadh nearing completion, a move to the Saudi Pro League appears increasingly likely once the tournament concludes.
