Mamelodi Sundowns have been dealt a significant setback in the build-up to their CAF Champions League final against AS FAR after defender Keno Kobedi sustained an injury during a domestic league match.
The defender was forced off before half-time in Sundowns’ South African top-flight fixture against Kaizer Chiefs, raising concerns over his availability for the continental showpiece. Kobedi, who has also been referred to as Cupido in some reports, is believed to have suffered a serious injury, although the full extent has yet to be confirmed.
The timing of the setback presents a challenge for head coach Miguel Cardoso, who is preparing his squad for one of the most important matches of the season. Defensive stability is expected to be crucial as Sundowns aim to overcome strong opposition in the final.
CAF has already confirmed the schedule for the two-legged tie. The first leg will take place on Sunday, 17 May at Tshwane Stadium, with kick-off at 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT). The return leg is set for Sunday, 24 May at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, starting at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT).
Sundowns now face a race against time to assess Kobedi’s condition and consider possible adjustments to their defensive line. The injury could force Cardoso to rely on squad depth, with alternative options needing to step up on one of the biggest stages in African club football.
With the final fast approaching, the absence of a key defender may influence Sundowns’ preparations and tactical approach, as they look to navigate a demanding contest against the Moroccan side.
