Miguel Cardoso reveals secrets behind Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League success

Miguel Cardoso believes a powerful blend of culture, quality, and relentless work ethic is the foundation behind Mamelodi Sundowns’ continued dominance in African club football.

The Brazilians have reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League for the third consecutive season after eliminating Stade Malien, reinforcing their status as one of the continent’s most consistent forces.

For Cardoso, the journey to sustained success begins with a strong internal culture built on clear values and mentality.

“There are many things needed to achieve such performance… a strong will, strong desire, strong commitment, and mindset,” he explained. “It has to do with values you develop inside a club.”

However, the Portuguese tactician was quick to stress that mentality alone is not enough without the right level of talent.

“There are no values that are not sustained on quality,” he added, pointing to the club’s ability to attract and retain top players capable of competing at the highest level.

Cardoso also acknowledged the contributions of previous coaches and staff, as well as moments where fortune played its part in key matches. But he insisted luck only rewards preparation.

“Usually we say luck needs a lot of work… to appear once can happen, but to be there consistently speaks for itself—it speaks to the greatness and the level that must be constantly rebuilt and maintained.”

That same philosophy is deeply ingrained within the squad, according to defender Keagan Johannes, who highlighted the expectations placed on every player at the club.

“As a player joining Sundowns, you already know what is expected based on the history and philosophy of the club,” he said. “It doesn’t come overnight—there’s a lot of hard work, dedication, and discipline.”

Johannes added that maintaining the club’s high standards becomes a personal responsibility for every member of the squad, driving them to continuously improve and uphold Sundowns’ reputation on the continental stage.

Attention now turns to their semi-final clash against Espérance de Tunis, with Sundowns holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Tunis.

As they chase another final appearance, Cardoso’s message is clear: success at this level is no accident it is built, sustained, and earned through consistency at every level of the club.
