Three Senegal internationals will be in action on Thursday evening as the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals get under way, highlighting the growing influence of African players on Europe’s club stage.
At the centre of attention is Ismaïla Sarr, who has been a key figure for Crystal Palace as they prepare to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their semi-final tie in Krakow.
The London club reached this stage after overcoming ACF Fiorentina, winning 3-0 in the first leg before suffering a 2-1 defeat in the return match.
Sarr played a decisive role in both encounters, scoring in each leg to help secure Palace’s progress.
Palace’s European run has provided a contrast to their domestic form, with the club currently positioned in mid-table in the Premier League.
However, success in Europe has offered a different narrative, with the team now just two matches away from a potential final.
Their opponents, Shakhtar Donetsk, arrive in strong form.
After finishing third in the previous Ukrainian Premier League campaign, they have responded impressively this season and currently lead the standings by a significant margin.
The Ukrainian side are also seeking to add European success to their domestic ambitions.
Elsewhere, two more Senegal internationals will be involved in the night’s other semi-final clash. Pathé Ciss and Nobel Mendy are part of the Rayo Vallecano squad set to host RC Strasbourg.
Rayo Vallecano head into the match with confidence following a dominant display in the quarter-finals, where they defeated AEK Athens 6-1 on aggregate.
That tie included a 3-0 victory in the first leg and a 3-1 win in the second, underlining their attacking strength.
The upcoming fixture represents a historic moment for both Rayo Vallecano and Strasbourg, with neither club having previously reached the semi-final stage of a major European competition. It will also mark the first meeting between the two sides.
Rayo have, however, enjoyed past success against French opposition, having beaten FC Girondins de Bordeaux home and away during the 2000/01 season.
Strasbourg’s history against Spanish clubs dates back much further, including a memorable tie against FC Barcelona in the 1964/65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which they ultimately won on a coin toss after three draws.
For Senegal, the presence of Sarr, Ciss and Mendy at this stage of the competition reflects the country’s continued contribution to top-level football.
All three players will be aiming to take a decisive step towards a European final, with the first-leg results likely to shape the outcome of their respective ties.
With both matches kicking off at 19:00 GMT, attention will be firmly on whether these Senegalese players can deliver once again on one of football’s biggest stages.
