Mamelodi Sundowns lead Orlando Pirates by one point at the top of the PSL, with both sides still unbeaten and a series of important fixtures ahead likely to shape the title race.
Sundowns have collected 23 points from nine matches, winning seven and drawing two, according to the PSL website. The African champions are the only team yet to lose in the competition.
Pirates have played eight games and sit on 22 points after seven victories and one draw. The Buccaneers ended Sundowns’ eight-year reign last season by the narrowest of margins, and the teams are again separated by a single point at this early stage.
AmaZulu remain third, three points behind Pirates as of 16 October. Kaizer Chiefs are fourth after drawing with Stellenbosch this week. They are also unbeaten, although they are beginning to lose ground on the leading pair.
The PSL is taking a one-week break while the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup continue.
Derbies and title meetings
Pirates’ next major test will come against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on 31 October. The return derby is scheduled for 13 March next year.
The sides shared the spoils in last season’s two league meetings in different ways. Pirates won the first encounter 0-3 on 28 February, before the teams drew 1-1 on 25 April.
Recent head-to-head results favour the Buccaneers, although the overall history of the fixture still gives the advantage to Amakhosi. Pirates will be seeking another significant result against their biggest rivals as they try to maintain pressure on Sundowns.
The two leading clubs will meet twice in the new year. Sundowns will host Pirates at Loftus Versfeld on 9 January, 2027, before the Buccaneers welcome Masandawana to Orlando Stadium on 24 April.
Those matches carry extra significance after Sundowns defeated Pirates in Durban to win this season’s MTN8 trophy. The team that comes out on top in those league encounters is likely to be within touching distance of the PSL title.
Champions League demands
The final outcome may also be influenced by events outside the domestic competition. Both Pirates and Sundowns remain involved in the CAF Champions League, which could place significant demands on their squads.
The CAF website lists the group-stage matchdays as 27-29 November, 4-6 and 18-20 December, followed by 8-10, 15-17 and 22-24 January 2027.
Should either side progress, the schedule will become even more demanding. The quarter-finals are planned for 26-28 February and 5-7 March next year, with the semi-finals taking place in April and the finals in May.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has already warned that fixture congestion could affect the PSL campaign. Cited by Cape Times, he acknowledged that the pressure was increasing as the season developed.
