Tottenham loanee Pape Matar Sarr has been described as a potential “crucial figure” in Juventus’ midfield after helping the Italian side beat Celta Vigo 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday.
Juventus recovered from conceding first to secure victory in their second match of the competition’s league phase, with Sarr making a significant contribution in midfield.
The Senegal international recorded 88 touches and completed 65 passes, while his three interceptions were the most made by any Juventus player during the match, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 24-year-old also won six duels and attempted three shots. One was blocked, one was on target and the other missed.
“Sarr has shown that he can become a crucial figure in the Bianconeri’s midfield,” wrote Gazzetta.
“He’s highly effective at breaking up play and in transition, although he still needs to improve in the final third.”
Sarr has played five times for Juventus in all competitions this season and has started three matches. He completed the full 90 minutes in both of the club’s Europa League fixtures, against NEC and Celta Vigo.
His opportunities have increased during the lengthy absences of Khephren Thuram and Manuel Locatelli, allowing the midfielder to establish himself in Juventus’ starting line-up.
Sarr joined Juventus on loan from Tottenham for one season. The Bianconeri paid €2.5m for the temporary deal and have the option to sign him permanently for a further €27.5m.
Lorenzo Bettoni, the Editor of Football Italia, said Sarr’s performances had demonstrated his strength in Italian football and argued that Juventus should retain him.
“You can’t compare him with Locatelli, he is a complete player. Juventus should keep him and loan out Locatelli. He has stamped his muscles in Italian football.”
