Osimhen cleared to play in Istanbul derby

Nigeria international Victor Osimhen is expected to play a central role in one of Turkish football’s most significant fixtures of the season, after being cleared to feature in Galatasaray’s clash with rivals Fenerbahce.

The Istanbul derby, which takes place on Sunday, could prove decisive in the race for the Süper Lig title, with only four points separating the two sides at the top of the table. Galatasaray lead the standings on 71 points, while Fenerbahce remain in close pursuit with 67.

The match had been overshadowed by uncertainty surrounding Osimhen’s availability after Fenerbahce raised concerns over protective equipment worn by the striker. The club submitted an appeal to the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), arguing that the arm guard could pose a risk to other players.

The protective gear was introduced after Osimhen suffered a forearm fracture in a recent match against Liverpool. However, following a review, the TFF dismissed the complaint and ruled that the striker would be permitted to wear the device, allowing him to participate in the encounter.

Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray for a reported Turkish-record fee of €70m, is widely regarded as one of the standout performers in the league this season. The 27-year-old has been instrumental in his side’s push for the title and is expected to spearhead their attack once again.

Galatasaray’s squad also features several high-profile players, including Gabriel Sara, Lucas Torreira and Mauro Icardi, while Fenerbahce boast a similarly strong lineup filled with international talent. The fixture is widely seen as a defining moment in the campaign, with the outcome likely to shape the remainder of the title race.

Adding further intrigue to the contest is the reported presence of scouts from several of Europe’s leading clubs. According to reports, representatives from Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Juventus are expected to attend the match at Rams Park.

Osimhen has previously been linked with moves to a number of these clubs, although no transfer has materialised. The increased interest suggests that a potential move could be revisited during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Any deal, however, is likely to require a significant financial commitment. Having invested heavily to secure the striker’s services, Galatasaray are expected to demand a fee in excess of €100m for his transfer.

For now, the focus remains firmly on domestic matters. A victory for Galatasaray would strengthen their grip on the title and potentially deliver a decisive blow to their rivals’ ambitions.

With both teams aware of the stakes, and the attention of Europe’s elite fixed firmly on the pitch, the latest edition of the Istanbul derby promises to be a defining moment in the Turkish football season.
