Valencia boosted their fight against relegation with a crucial 2–1 win over Girona at the Mestalla, thanks in part to a decisive goal from Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar.
The forward found the net for the second consecutive match, helping Valencia CF secure three valuable points and climb to 11th place in the table with 39 points from 33 games.
Coming into the match, both Valencia and Girona FC were locked in a tense battle to steer clear of the drop zone, adding significance to Saturday’s encounter. Head coach Carlos Corberan handed Sadiq another start following his recent goal in a draw against RCD Mallorca.
Valencia began the match on the front foot, dominating possession and creating the more threatening opportunities. Sadiq himself came close in the 19th minute but failed to convert from inside the penalty area, firing his effort wide. Despite their early control, the home side were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.
The breakthrough eventually came shortly after the restart. Largie Ramazani linked up effectively with Javi Guerra before slotting a low finish past goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to give Valencia the lead.
Momentum remained with the hosts, and just nine minutes later they extended their advantage. Sadiq rose to meet a cross from Jose Gaya, producing a powerful header after losing his marker. The striker’s movement and composure under pressure proved decisive as he doubled Valencia’s lead.
Girona responded in the 63rd minute when Joel Roca pulled a goal back, setting up a tense final period. Valencia, however, held firm despite increasing pressure from the visitors.
Sadiq’s contribution ended in the 71st minute when he was replaced by Hugo Duro, but his earlier goal ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.
The victory marks an important step for Valencia as they look to secure their top-flight status, while also highlighting Sadiq’s growing influence in the squad. The Nigerian striker has now scored in consecutive matches and appears to be regaining form at a crucial stage of the season.
His recent performances could also have implications beyond club football. With international fixtures approaching, including matches against Poland and Portugal, Sadiq’s form may attract the attention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as he considers his squad selection.
For Valencia, the immediate focus remains on maintaining momentum in their battle for survival, with this result offering both relief and renewed confidence heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
