Fulham boosted their hopes of securing European football with a narrow victory over Aston Villa, as Nigerian internationals Samuel Chukwueze and Calvin Bassey featured prominently in a 1-0 win at Craven Cottage.
The decisive moment came just before half-time when Ryan Sessegnon reacted quickest to convert a rebound, sealing Fulham’s 14th league win of the campaign and ending a two-match winless run. The result strengthens the West London side’s push for a place in European competition next season.
Fulham entered the match without Alex Iwobi, who was unavailable due to injury sustained in their previous outing against Brentford. Despite his absence, the home side started brightly and created the clearer opportunities in the opening stages.
Chukwueze came close to opening the scoring midway through the first half, but his effort was denied by Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. The visitors struggled to match Fulham’s early intensity, with the hosts pressing high and controlling much of the possession.
The breakthrough arrived moments before the interval. After Martínez saved a header from Raúl Jiménez, Sessegnon was on hand to finish the rebound, giving Fulham a deserved lead heading into the break.
Fulham appeared to have doubled their advantage in the second half when Timothy Castagne found the net, but the goal was disallowed following a foul in the build-up. Aston Villa responded by increasing the pressure in the closing stages, pushing forward in search of an equaliser.
Despite the late surge from the visitors, Fulham’s defence held firm to secure all three points. Bassey and Chukwueze, who made their 27th and 22nd league appearances of the season respectively, both played significant roles in maintaining the team’s structure and attacking threat.
The victory keeps Fulham firmly in contention for a return to European competition, which would mark their first appearance on that stage since the 2011–12 season. With the campaign entering its final phase, momentum could prove crucial.
Attention will now turn to their upcoming fixture against Arsenal, which is expected to provide a stern test of their credentials. Maintaining consistency will be key if Fulham are to sustain their challenge.
Beyond club football, the performances of Chukwueze and Bassey are likely to be welcomed by Eric Chelle, who will be encouraged by the form of two important players ahead of upcoming national team commitments.
For Fulham, however, the immediate priority remains clear: continue their strong run and secure a coveted European place.
