Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez has insisted his priority remains delivering the Scottish Premiership title, despite increasing speculation over a potential move away from Ibrox at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old centre-back has attracted attention following a string of strong performances, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his progress. However, Fernandez has downplayed suggestions that he could leave, emphasising his commitment to the Glasgow side and their ongoing title challenge.
Speaking ahead of Rangers’ upcoming match against Motherwell, Fernandez said he is not distracted by rumours linking him with other teams.
“I don’t really read into stuff like that. I just like to focus on the job I’m doing here. If there’s noise going on, I am happy for the noise, it’s a great achievement, I guess, something that you can look to knowing that you are doing well,” Fernandez told reporters.
His form this season has been central to Rangers’ campaign. In 28 appearances, Fernandez has scored six goals, underlining his effectiveness at both ends of the pitch. His impact has extended beyond club football, with the defender also scoring on his full international debut for Nigeria.
Fernandez’s rapid rise has drawn particular attention, given his relatively recent move from the lower tiers of English football. Less than a year ago, he was playing for Peterborough United in England’s third division. His transition to top-flight football in Scotland has been seamless, culminating in his inclusion in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in his debut season.
Despite the growing interest, Fernandez reiterated that his immediate focus remains firmly on Rangers’ domestic ambitions.
“But right now, I am focused on taking it game by game, and winning the title, and bringing it back for this club because I love it here,” he said.
When asked about his longer-term future and whether he envisages staying at the club beyond the current campaign, Fernandez indicated he sees himself continuing at Ibrox. He highlighted the security of his existing contract as well as his satisfaction with life at Rangers.
“I haven’t heard anything. I see myself being here. I’ve still got four years left on my contract. Whether that’s to run down my contract, I’m happy I’m here. I’m happy to carry on being here.”
The defender’s comments come at a crucial stage of the season, with Rangers pushing for league success and the possibility of European competition next term. Qualification for the UEFA Champions League could further strengthen the club’s position and potentially influence Fernandez’s future.
For now, however, the player appears determined to keep his attention on matters on the pitch. His performances have already established him as a key figure in the squad, and his contributions could prove decisive as Rangers seek to secure the Premiership title.
While speculation may continue to surround him, Fernandez’s message is clear: his focus is on winning trophies with Rangers, rather than contemplating a move elsewhere.
