Official: Manchester United loan Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana back to Trabzonspor

Cameroon international André Onana will spend another season in Turkey after Manchester United confirmed the goalkeeper has rejoined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

The move sees the 30-year-old return to the Turkish club following a successful spell there last season, with the new agreement containing no option for Trabzonspor to make the transfer permanent.

For African football supporters, the deal ensures one of the continent’s leading goalkeepers will continue playing regular first-team football while Manchester United retain control over his long-term future.

The move had been widely anticipated in recent weeks before receiving official confirmation from both clubs.

Trabzonspor announced that Onana would once again represent the club during the 2026-27 campaign after agreeing another temporary deal with the Premier League side.

Manchester United also confirmed the goalkeeper’s departure, wishing him well for the season ahead.

The arrangement means Onana will not feature for the English club during the upcoming campaign but remains contracted to the Red Devils once the loan expires.

Importantly, the agreement does not include an option to buy, leaving Manchester United with the final decision over the Cameroonian’s future beyond this season.

The loan marks a return to familiar surroundings for Onana after impressing during his previous spell at Papara Park.

Last season, the goalkeeper made 40 appearances across all competitions for Trabzonspor, helping the Turkish side secure a third-place finish in the Süper Lig while also lifting the Turkish Cup.

His performances established him as an important figure in the squad throughout the campaign.

League statistics also showed the Cameroon international kept six clean sheets and conceded 42 goals in 34 league appearances during his time with the club.

Those displays convinced Trabzonspor to bring him back for another season as they prepare for a new domestic campaign.

Onana originally joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has made 102 appearances for the club.

However, another loan move suggests that regular first-team opportunities will once again come in Turkey rather than England.

The decision also allows Manchester United to maintain ownership of the experienced goalkeeper while giving him another season of competitive football.

For Trabzonspor, bringing Onana back provides continuity in a position that proved crucial to the club’s recent success.

The goalkeeper already knows the squad, the coaching staff and the demands of Turkish football, factors that should help him settle quickly after his return.

From an African football perspective, the move ensures one of Cameroon’s most experienced internationals remains in a prominent European league.

Regular club football will also be important as Onana continues representing the Indomitable Lions on the international stage.
