Burkina Faso international Mohamed Ouédraogo has completed a move to French club Olympique Lyonnais after the Ligue 1 side confirmed the signing of the defender from Austrian outfit SCR Altach.
The 23-year-old joins Lyon on a long-term contract running until June 2031, with the French club agreeing a transfer worth €2.2 million, plus up to €0.6 million in performance-related bonuses and a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
The transfer marks another significant milestone for African football, with Ouédraogo becoming the latest Burkinabe player to earn a move to one of Europe’s major leagues after impressing in Austria.
Lyon announced the defender as their fourth signing of the summer transfer window as the club continues strengthening its squad ahead of a campaign that includes UEFA Champions League qualifying.
According to the club, the agreement with SCR Altach includes an initial transfer fee of €2.2 million, with additional bonuses potentially increasing the value of the deal.
The Austrian club will also receive 10 per cent of any future transfer fee should Lyon decide to sell the defender.
Ouédraogo arrives in France after establishing himself as one of Altach’s key players.
Having been developed at Majestic SC in Burkina Faso, the defender moved to Austria in 2023, joining SCR Altach at the age of 20.
He progressed through the club’s development system before being promoted to the senior team in February 2024.
Since then, he has enjoyed a steady rise.
Across his time with Altach, Ouédraogo made 72 appearances, scoring five goals and providing four assists.
His performances during the 2025-26 season proved particularly impressive.
The defender featured in 35 matches and contributed seven goal involvements, underlining his ability to support attacks from the back.
Another report from the club highlighted that he played 29 Bundesliga matches last season and scored four goals, further demonstrating his growing influence.
His consistent displays earned him international recognition with Burkina Faso, where he has already collected nine senior caps despite still being only 23 years old.
The move to Lyon represents the biggest transfer of his career and another important step in his development.
The Ligue 1 side believes the defender can strengthen its squad as it prepares for the challenges of domestic competition and European qualification.
Ouédraogo admitted the opportunity carried personal significance because of his family’s connection with the French club.
Quoted by Lyon following the announcement, he said:
“It’s incredible for me to sign for Olympique Lyonnais. I’ve always followed this team closely because my dad was a big OL supporter. Joining this club today means so much to me; it’s a dream come true.”
His arrival continues Lyon’s busy recruitment drive this summer.
The Burkina Faso international follows Kaïl Boudache, Mads Bidstrup and Julien Duranville as the club’s latest additions ahead of the new season.
