Esperance Sportive de Tunis are facing a period of significant transition following their elimination from the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns, with internal assessments pointing towards a substantial restructuring of the squad.
The defeat has intensified scrutiny of the current group, with growing sentiment among observers that the team is no longer equipped to compete at the highest level in African football. As a result, a rebuilding phase is increasingly being viewed as unavoidable rather than optional.
Defensive concerns come into focus
Among the most pressing issues identified is the team’s defensive instability. Yassine Meriah has experienced a decline in form, compounded by recurring injuries that have limited his availability during key stages of the season. His performances have also been affected by costly errors that have undermined the team’s results.
At left-back, Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida has struggled to deliver the expected attacking contribution. Despite featuring in 30 matches, he has recorded just three assists, a return considered modest when compared with full-backs from leading continental clubs such as Sundowns, Pyramids FC, AS FAR and Al Ahly SC.
Meanwhile, Nidal Al-Aifi appears set to leave, having fallen out of contention and no longer featuring in the club’s plans.
Midfield struggles highlight lack of influence
In midfield, the lack of decisive impact has been another area of concern. Hossam Taka has featured in 13 Champions League matches without registering a goal or assist, underlining his limited contribution in key moments.
Similarly, Shehab Al-Jabali has not met expectations, producing just two goals and three assists across 32 appearances. For a player operating in an advanced role, such output has been viewed as insufficient for a club of Esperance’s stature.
Limited options from the bench
Concerns extend beyond the starting lineup to the depth of the squad. Players such as Khalil Al-Qunaishi and Ghaith Al-Wahhabi have struggled to make a meaningful impact, highlighting the need for reinforcements capable of providing greater competition and reliability.
Attacking line fails to deliver
In attack, Yann Sas has not justified expectations despite his market value, scoring only once in 10 Champions League appearances. His contract situation suggests a departure is likely at the end of the season.
Wael Derbali is also expected to move on after failing to establish himself as a regular contributor.
Domestic ambitions remain
Following their continental exit, Esperance are expected to redirect their focus towards domestic competitions. The team currently sit second in the Tunisian league with 54 points, just behind Club Africain, who lead with 55 points, although Esperance have a game in hand.
The Tunisian Cup is also seen as a key objective, offering the club an opportunity to salvage their season after disappointment on the continental stage.
Rebuilding for a return to continental prominence
Esperance’s early exit from the Champions League has exposed structural weaknesses across the squad, prompting calls for sweeping changes. With several players expected to depart and domestic targets now taking priority, the club faces a critical period of rebuilding as it seeks to restore its competitiveness on the African stage.
