Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi has praised the Super Eagles’ overall performance in their 2-2 draw with Poland, describing the contest as an encouraging display despite his side being denied victory by a late equaliser.
The midfielder, who returned to the starting line-up after missing Nigeria’s recent Unity Cup matches in London, led the team out at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on Wednesday evening. His return provided a significant boost for the Super Eagles as they faced a Polish side that ultimately fought back twice to secure a draw in the international friendly.
Nigeria appeared on course for victory after taking the lead on two occasions during the match. However, the visitors were unable to preserve their advantage, allowing Poland to score late and ensure the contest ended level.
Speaking after the game, Ndidi offered a positive assessment of the performance while acknowledging a noticeable difference between Nigeria’s display before and after the interval.
“It was a good game, it was a brilliant,” Ndidi said as per Ubuntu Pitch.
“We dominated the game. First half was an amazing game and second half we tried to sit back a bit, to defend a bit and then press. Entirely, it was a good game.”
His comments reflected a match in which Nigeria impressed for long periods, particularly during the opening half. The Super Eagles controlled significant portions of the game early on and looked capable of claiming a notable away result against European opposition.
The second half, however, unfolded differently. According to the captain, Nigeria adopted a more cautious approach after the break, focusing more on defensive organisation while still attempting to press their opponents when opportunities arose. That tactical shift coincided with Poland’s efforts to work their way back into the contest.
Ndidi’s performance was one of the key talking points of the evening. The Besiktas midfielder completed the full 90 minutes and was among only three Nigerian players to remain on the pitch throughout the match, alongside goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and debutant Abdullahi Bewene.
The captain also achieved another distinction during the encounter. He was the only member of Nigeria’s starting line-up who had previously featured when the Super Eagles defeated Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw in March 2018, providing a link between the two meetings of the national teams.
Despite the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser, Ndidi emphasised that the team’s objective remains consistent regardless of the opposition.
“We always try as much as possible to get a win in every game. With our philosophy, with our vision and most importantly is to try and give a good game, try to be at our best and try to see if we win the game.”
His remarks underlined the mindset within the squad as it continues to build under head coach Eric Chelle. While the result denied Nigeria victory, the captain’s assessment suggested there were plenty of positives to take from a performance that combined attacking intent, long spells of control and resilience against a competitive Polish side.
For the Super Eagles, the draw may not have delivered the desired outcome, but it provided another opportunity to test themselves at a high level and offered encouraging signs as the team continues its development.
