Ghana head to Philadelphia for Croatia showdown

Ghana will travel from their training base in Rhode Island to Philadelphia on Thursday as they step up preparations for a decisive Group L encounter against Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars go into the final round of group-stage matches knowing that victory on Saturday would secure their place in the Round of 32, following an encouraging start to the tournament that has left them unbeaten after two games.

Preparations continued on Wednesday with a recovery session at Bryant University, less than a day after Ghana produced a disciplined defensive display to hold England to a goalless draw at Gillette Stadium.

The result strengthened Ghana’s position in Group L and maintained their unbeaten record. Carlos Queiroz’s side have collected four points from their opening two fixtures, having recorded one win and one draw. England also sit on four points, leaving qualification and final group placings to be decided in the closing round of matches.

Attention has now turned fully to Croatia, with the Black Stars aware of the significance of Saturday’s contest at Lincoln Financial Field. A win would guarantee progression to the knockout stage, while a draw could also prove sufficient depending on the final group standings and the rankings of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Before facing Croatia, Ghana will hold one final training session in Philadelphia on Friday as they complete their preparations for the crucial fixture.

Confidence within the squad has been boosted by Tuesday’s performance against England, one of the teams considered among the favourites at the tournament. Ghana successfully frustrated their opponents throughout the match, earning a valuable point through a determined and organised defensive effort.

Several players were instrumental in securing the result. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivered another assured display, while defender Jerome Opoku and midfielder Kwasi Sibo also played important roles in helping Ghana preserve a clean sheet.

Despite the positive mood surrounding the team, head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged caution and insisted that the job is not yet complete.

“We have not won anything yet,” the Ghana coach said.

Reflecting on the difficulty of the competition, Queiroz added: “Points in this World Cup are terribly expensive.”

His comments underline the importance of maintaining focus ahead of a match that could determine whether Ghana advances to the next phase of the tournament.

While the coach has sought to keep expectations in check, there is no shortage of ambition within the camp. Midfielder Kwasi Sibo has already outlined the team’s objective for the final group fixture, stating that the Black Stars are targeting victory over Croatia and aiming to finish at the top of Group L.

That ambition reflects the confidence generated by Ghana’s performances so far. The team has shown defensive resilience, tactical discipline and an ability to compete with strong opposition, qualities that have placed them in a favourable position heading into the final group match.

Saturday’s encounter promises to be one of the most significant games of Ghana’s World Cup campaign. Qualification for the Round of 32 is within reach, but the Black Stars know there is still work to do.

With preparations entering their final phase and belief growing within the squad, Ghana will arrive in Philadelphia determined to secure the result required to extend their stay at the tournament and potentially claim first place in Group L.
