Nigeria retain Unity Cup with victory over Jamaica

Nigeria retained the Unity Cup in emphatic fashion on Saturday, defeating Jamaica 3-0 at The Valley Stadium to claim a fourth title in the competition and maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament.

A brace from midfielder Alhassan Yusuf and a goal from striker Terem Moffi ensured the Super Eagles successfully defended the trophy, capping another impressive campaign for the three-time African champions.

The victory completed a dominant run through the competition for Eric Chelle’s side, who had reached the final after defeating Zimbabwe 2-0 in the semi-finals. In that encounter, Femi Azeez scored both goals, with Moffi providing the assists on each occasion.

Jamaica secured their own place in the final after overcoming India by the same scoreline in the other semi-final, setting up a meeting between the two nations in the title decider.

Nigeria wasted little time in asserting themselves in the final and took the lead after only three minutes. A long throw-in created confusion inside the Jamaican penalty area and, after the goalkeeper managed only to push away a flicked header, Yusuf reacted quickest to convert the loose ball and hand his side an early advantage.

The Super Eagles continued to control the contest and were rewarded with a second goal midway through the second half. Azeez delivered an accurate cross into the box, where Moffi found himself unmarked and headed comfortably into the net to double Nigeria’s lead.

With Jamaica struggling to find a route back into the match, Nigeria remained in command and completed the scoring in stoppage time. Philip Otele supplied a well-weighted pass that released Yusuf, and the midfielder kept his composure to curl the ball beyond the goalkeeper and secure his second goal of the evening.

The result underlined Nigeria’s superiority throughout the tournament and highlighted the strength within Chelle’s squad as preparations continue for future international assignments.

Earlier on Saturday, Zimbabwe claimed third place after recording a narrow 1-0 victory over India. Prince Dube’s first-half penalty proved decisive, with the Warriors successfully protecting their advantage until the final whistle.

The Unity Cup formed part of the preparations for both Nigeria and Zimbabwe ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which is scheduled to begin later this year.

Nigeria have been placed in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, while Zimbabwe will compete in Group E, where they will face DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Having successfully defended their Unity Cup crown, attention now turns to Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June.

The Super Eagles have positive memories of their previous meeting with Poland, having secured a 1-0 victory in the nations’ first encounter in 2018 through a second-half penalty from Victor Moses.

Their last meeting with Portugal, however, ended in disappointment, as Nigeria suffered a 4-0 defeat in a friendly match in 2022. The upcoming fixture therefore presents an opportunity for Chelle’s side to produce an improved performance against the European nation.

The convincing victory over Jamaica will nevertheless provide Nigeria with valuable confidence as they continue their preparations for the challenges that lie ahead on the international stage. With silverware secured and several players impressing during the tournament, the Super Eagles appear well positioned for the next phase of their campaign.
