The controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 title has taken a fresh legal turn, as Morocco moves to strengthen its case against Senegal following the disputed decision to reassign the trophy.
The Moroccan Bar Association has confirmed it is taking concrete steps to document events linked to Senegal’s recent trophy celebration, signaling a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute.
Evidence Gathering Begins
According to the association, a court-appointed commissioner has been assigned to investigate and formally record what transpired during Senegal’s celebration at the Stade de France in Paris.
The event took place after Senegal’s 2-0 friendly victory over Peru, marking their first public appearance since the controversy erupted.
Murad Al-Ajouti explained that the objective is to “officially establish the facts,” which could later serve as critical evidence in ongoing legal proceedings.
Claims of “Institutional Defiance”
Moroccan legal representatives view the celebration as more than symbolic. They argue it may represent a direct challenge to the ruling made by the Confederation of African Football Appeals Committee, which awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory after Senegal walked off during the final.
The Bar Association described the event as a form of “institutional defiance,” suggesting it could influence how the case is interpreted by global football authorities.
The report being compiled is expected to include detailed elements such as the identities of organizers, the display of the trophy, and messages conveyed during the celebration.
Case Moves Toward Global Bodies
Once completed, the legal document is set to be submitted to international bodies, including the FIFA Ethics Committee and other disciplinary chambers.
The aim is to reinforce Morocco’s legal position by presenting tangible evidence that could support claims of non-compliance or disregard for official decisions.
CAS Decision Still Key
Despite these developments, legal experts maintain that the final outcome rests with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is currently reviewing Senegal’s appeal.
Rachid Lazraq outlined three possible scenarios: upholding CAF’s ruling in Morocco’s favor, annulling the decision due to legal flaws, or sending the case back to CAF for reconsideration.
He emphasized that, until CAS delivers its verdict, the Appeals Committee’s decision remains legally binding.
