Ghana defender Senaya undergoes hamstring surgery

Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya has undergone successful surgery after sustaining a hamstring injury during Ghana’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 defeat by Colombia.

The 25-year-old right-back suffered the injury early in the knockout match in Kansas City, bringing an abrupt end to a tournament in which he had featured in every game for Ghana.

Senaya was forced off after just 13 minutes against Colombia after pulling up while chasing a loose ball. Although he initially attempted to continue playing, he was eventually unable to do so, and subsequent scans confirmed the seriousness of the injury.

The operation has now been completed successfully, with the defender announcing the outcome in a post on social media.

In the message, Senaya also expressed his determination to recover fully and return to action stronger following the setback.

The injury ended what had been an impressive World Cup campaign for the Auxerre defender.

Senaya started each of Ghana’s four matches at the 2026 tournament and played every minute of the Black Stars’ three group-stage fixtures before his participation was cut short in the Round of 32.

His performances throughout the competition established him as one of Ghana’s most consistent players.

Among the highlights of his tournament were his contributions to two clean sheets, helping the Black Stars shut out both Panama and England during the group stage.

His reliability at right-back formed an important part of Ghana’s defensive displays before injury denied him the opportunity to complete the knockout match against Colombia.

The timing of the injury is also a setback for his club, Auxerre, who are now expected to be without the defender for the opening stages of the 2026/27 season.

The French side will have to begin the new campaign without one of their regular defenders while he continues his rehabilitation.

Senaya made 20 appearances for Auxerre during the 2025/26 season and scored one goal.

His form at club level earned him the opportunity to feature prominently for Ghana at the World Cup, where he established himself as the first-choice right-back throughout the tournament.

The defender’s injury occurred at a crucial stage of Ghana’s World Cup campaign, depriving the Black Stars of one of their most dependable performers during the knockout contest against Colombia.

Although the injury has ruled him out for an extended period, the successful surgery marks the first step in his recovery.

Senaya’s focus will now turn to rehabilitation as he works towards returning to competitive football.

His absence represents a significant loss for Auxerre ahead of the new season, while Ghana will also hope the defender can make a full recovery after demonstrating his value during the World Cup, where he played a key role in the team’s defensive performances before his tournament was brought to an early end by injury.
