Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso is reportedly willing to consider taking charge of Al Ahly SC, even if the Egyptian giants fail to qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League.
Al Ahly are assessing their options after a disappointing campaign that saw them fall short in the domestic title race and miss out on a place in Africa’s premier club competition. The club’s hierarchy is understood to be evaluating the future of current head coach Jess Thorup, whose position has come under increasing scrutiny.
Cardoso has emerged as one of the names under consideration as Al Ahly look to rebuild ahead of the new season. The Portuguese tactician enhanced his reputation recently after guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory, securing the club’s second continental title.
Sources indicate that Cardoso would not be discouraged by the prospect of managing Al Ahly outside the Champions League, with the opportunity to lead one of Africa’s most successful clubs remaining a significant attraction.
However, the coach is also expected to hold discussions with Sundowns regarding an improved contract and a possible extension following the club’s continental success. His future is therefore likely to depend on negotiations with both clubs in the coming weeks.
Cardoso’s triumph over AS FAR in the CAF Champions League final has further strengthened his credentials, making him one of the most sought-after coaches on the African football scene.
Al Ahly are expected to make a decision on their managerial direction soon as they seek to restore domestic success and re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite.
