Luca Zidane faces new challenge as Algeria prepare for Togo test

Luca Zidane could experience a new chapter in his international career when Algeria face Togo in Lomé on 17 November, with the goalkeeper yet to play for the Desert Warriors in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Leganés goalkeeper has made 10 international appearances for Algeria and is hoping to return to the squad for the national team’s November camp. The two sides are scheduled to meet at the Kégué Stadium in the Togolese capital, where Zidane could face conditions different from those he has encountered in his previous international outings.

Despite representing Algeria in several countries, the son of former France international Zinedine Zidane has not played for the North African side in the heart of the African continent. An appearance against Togo would therefore mark a new experience for the goalkeeper, provided he is selected to feature.

Zidane has previously played international matches in Algeria, Morocco, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States and Canada. However, a trip to Togo could present a different challenge as he continues to establish himself within the Algerian national team.

Zidane targets Algeria return after suspension

The goalkeeper missed Algeria’s previous training camp because of a suspension imposed by the Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Committee.

His possible return for the November camp is now attracting attention, particularly with Algeria scheduled to face Togo twice during the period. The matches could provide Zidane with another opportunity to strengthen his position in the squad.

Zidane joined the Algerian national team in October 2025. He was initially an unused substitute for the match against Somalia before making his international debut against Uganda at the Hussein Aït Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou.

That appearance came during the final round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and marked the beginning of his international career with Algeria.

However, his early progress was interrupted when an injury ruled him out of the two friendly matches against Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia in November 2025.

Algeria subsequently played a series of international friendlies across Europe and North America, giving the goalkeeper’s international career a wider geographical reach.

Those fixtures included meetings with Guatemala and Uruguay in Italy, a match against the Netherlands on their home ground and an encounter with Bolivia in the United States.

The games formed part of Algeria’s international programme, although Zidane’s availability for the November fixtures against Togo will depend on the final squad selection.

Starting position remains uncertain

Whether Zidane will reclaim a starting place for Algeria remains one of the key questions ahead of the November camp.

Although his return to the squad is anticipated, his involvement against Togo has not been confirmed. The final decision will rest with the technical staff led by Ibrahim Hamdani when the squad selections are announced.

A match in Lomé would offer Zidane the chance to experience another footballing environment while adding to his international appearances for Algeria. The trip could also provide a fresh test after his previous outings in North Africa, Europe and North America.

The goalkeeper’s situation will therefore be closely watched as Algeria prepare for their meetings with Togo. His selection would give him an opportunity to strengthen his standing within the squad, although securing a place in the starting line-up is not guaranteed.

For Zidane, the potential trip represents more than another international fixture. If he plays, it would be his first appearance for Algeria in sub-Saharan Africa, adding a new destination to his international career.

Until the coaching staff confirms its choices, however, questions remain over whether he will return to the starting team or have to wait longer for his next opportunity with the Desert Warriors.
