Ivory Coast teenager Yan Diomandé crowned Bundesliga Rookie of the Season

Ivory Coast youngster Yan Diomandé has completed a remarkable rise in German football after being named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season for 2025-26 following an outstanding debut campaign with RB Leipzig.

The 19-year-old winger, who joined Leipzig from Spanish side CD Leganés last summer, beat competition from Hamburg’s Luka Vušković and Bayer Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza to claim the award.

The honour was confirmed by both RB Leipzig and Sky Germany, with the prize decided through a combined voting system involving fans, clubs and selected experts.

Diomandé succeeds Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, who won the award last season, and becomes one of the latest African talents to make a major impact in one of Europe’s top leagues.

His success comes after a season in which he emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s biggest revelations, helping Leipzig secure a return to the UEFA Champions League while establishing himself as a key figure in the club’s attack.

The Ivorian arrived in Germany with relatively little attention but quickly adapted to the demands of the Bundesliga.

His explosive pace, direct running and composure in attacking situations immediately caught the attention of supporters and analysts alike.

Diomandé’s breakthrough moment came during Leipzig’s eighth Bundesliga match of the season against Augsburg.

The teenager scored his first goal for the club and also provided two assists in a performance that effectively launched his career in Germany.

From that point, he became increasingly influential in Leipzig’s attacking system.

By the end of the campaign, the winger had registered 12 league goals and nine assists in 33 appearances, impressive numbers for a player experiencing his first season in one of Europe’s toughest competitions.

Only Christoph Baumgartner produced better attacking statistics for Leipzig during the campaign.

Diomandé also established himself as one of the most dangerous dribblers in the Bundesliga.

According to league statistics, he attempted more dribbles than any other player in the division and contested the highest number of duels.

With a success rate of 55 percent, he also finished the season having won more duels than any other player in the Bundesliga.

Beyond the statistics, Diomandé earned praise for his consistency and ability to influence matches in crucial moments.

His performances in transition, willingness to track back defensively and confidence in one-on-one situations made him one of the standout young players in German football this season.

“The manner in which he keeps the opposition on their toes, tracks back and runs at players – it’s a pretty complete package,” Leipzig coach Ole Werner said earlier this season. “He’s a top character, a good lad and an extraordinary talent.”

The Bundesliga’s rookie award is reserved for players under the age of 23 on the opening day of the season.

Monthly rookie winners are nominated for the annual prize before a final vote involving supporters, clubs and experts determines the overall winner.

Diomandé’s victory continues a rapid rise that few predicted just a year ago.
