Cameroon international Andre Onana has returned to Manchester United following the completion of his loan spell with Trabzonspor, with the goalkeeper expected to report for pre-season training under manager Michael Carrick.
The 2025/26 campaign proved to be a successful rebuilding season for Onana after a difficult period in England, as the Cameroonian shot-stopper rediscovered his confidence and form during his time in Turkey.
Onana played a key role in Trabzonspor’s successful Turkish Cup campaign, producing a series of impressive performances throughout the competition. His most memorable contribution came in the final, where he delivered a commanding display to help the club lift the 2026 Turkish Cup.
His performances earned widespread praise from supporters and local media, who highlighted his leadership, composure and crucial saves as major factors behind the club’s success.
Despite returning to Old Trafford, uncertainty remains over the goalkeeper’s long-term future. Reports suggest Trabzonspor are interested in bringing him back for another season, either through a renewed loan agreement or a fresh temporary arrangement.
However, any deal is likely to depend on financial negotiations between the two clubs. Manchester United’s ownership group is reportedly unwilling to subsidise another loan move and would prefer any interested club to cover Onana’s full salary package.
The goalkeeper’s return also creates an important decision for Carrick and United’s coaching staff ahead of the new campaign. Pre-season is expected to provide an opportunity for Onana to be assessed before a final decision is made regarding his future.
At present, several possibilities remain on the table. Onana could remain at Manchester United and compete for a place in the squad, secure a permanent transfer elsewhere, or return to Trabzonspor if an agreement can be reached.
For now, the Cameroonian international is back at Old Trafford after a productive spell in Turkey, but his next move remains one of the key questions surrounding Manchester United’s summer transfer plans.
