Ghana defender Mumin returns after 13 months injury

Ghana defender Abdul Mumin made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Thursday night, coming off the bench in Rayo Vallecano’s 1-0 victory over Espanyol after more than a year on the sidelines.

The centre-back had not featured since 4 March 2025, when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture that abruptly ended his season. His appearance at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas marks the conclusion of a recovery process that stretched beyond 13 months and included multiple complications.

Mumin’s return came late in a tightly contested match that appeared destined for a draw until the closing stages. With the score still level in the 87th minute, Sergio Camello scored the decisive goal to give the home side the lead.

Shortly after, Mumin was introduced as a substitute to help see out the result, reinforcing the defence as Rayo Vallecano held on to secure all three points.

The defender’s road back to fitness had been far from straightforward. After the initial knee injury, his rehabilitation was disrupted by a secondary thigh problem, followed by a minor setback early in 2026. These issues prompted the club’s medical staff to adopt a cautious approach to his recovery.

Although he was declared fit to return in mid-February, Mumin did not immediately rejoin match action. Instead, he spent several weeks among the substitutes while head coach Iñigo Pérez assessed his readiness to compete at the highest level.

His eventual reintroduction reflects both patience and careful management by the club, as well as the player’s persistence through a demanding rehabilitation period.

Rayo Vallecano’s narrow victory provided a fitting backdrop for Mumin’s comeback, with the team requiring defensive stability in the final moments of the game. His presence helped the side maintain their lead during a tense conclusion to the match.

Despite his prolonged absence, the club appears to remain confident in Mumin’s long-term contribution. Reports indicate that discussions are underway regarding a potential contract extension that would keep him at the Madrid-based club until 2029.

The defender’s return represents a significant personal milestone after more than a year away from competitive football, and could offer a timely boost for Rayo Vallecano as they continue their campaign.

For Mumin, Thursday’s brief appearance may only be the first step, but it signals the end of a challenging chapter and the beginning of his reintegration into the team.
