Ghana appoints panel to select next Black Stars head coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has established a five-member committee to identify and recommend a successor to Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars.

The GFA made the announcement in an official statement this weekend, following a meeting between its leadership and the Ministry in Accra on Friday, 2 October 2026.

“This decision was taken following a fruitful meeting between the GFA leadership and the Ministry on Friday, 2 October 2026 in Accra,” the statement said.

The committee will be chaired by Fred Pappoe, a former vice-president of the Ghana Football Association. He brings extensive experience in football administration and governance to the process.

Pappoe will work alongside four other members: Anthony Baffoe, secretary-general of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) and a former Ghana international; Agbesi Dzakpasu (Esq.), a lawyer and football administrator; Stephen Appiah, the former captain of the Black Stars; and Faisal Chibsah, a high-performance specialist.

Committee’s mandate

“Under its mandate, the Committee is tasked with identifying, assessing and recommending a suitable candidate for the vacant position of Black Stars coach,” the GFA said.

The committee is expected to submit its report to the Ghana Football Association.

The Black Stars’ managerial position became vacant on Thursday, 1 October 2026, after Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz resigned following the September international window.

The GFA said the appointment process would be designed to ensure that Ghana selects a coach capable of leading the national team in its upcoming competitions.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry wish to assure Ghanaians that a transparent and merit-based process will be put in place to recruit a competent coach who will lead the Black Stars in upcoming competitions,” the statement added.

Applicants interested in the role have been asked to submit their applications and CVs to coaches.applications@ghanafa.org.
