Former Moroccan FA president Ali Fassi Fihri dies aged 71

The announcement was made on Sunday by the federation, which is currently led by Fouzi Lekjaa. The governing body confirmed the passing of the former football administrator and expressed condolences to his family.

Fassi Fihri served as president of the Moroccan Football Federation between 2009 and 2013, a period during which he oversaw the administration of football in the country and played a role in the development of the national game.

In a statement published on the federation’s official website, the organisation paid tribute to its former leader and conveyed sympathy to those close to him.

The statement said the federation “extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased.”

It added: “Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Moroccan Federation, on his own behalf and on behalf of all members of the Federation’s Executive Committee, extends his deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the family of the deceased.”

The death of Fassi Fihri marks a significant moment for Moroccan football, with many within the sport expected to remember his contribution to the federation during his four-year tenure.

Although the statement did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of his death, tributes are likely to emerge from figures across Moroccan and African football in recognition of his years of service to the game.

Fassi Fihri held the presidency during a period in which Moroccan football continued efforts to strengthen its domestic and international profile. His leadership came before the federation entered a new phase under Lekjaa, who has overseen major developments in Moroccan football in recent years.

The announcement also comes at a time when Moroccan football is focused on preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Morocco national football team, coached by Mohamed Wahbi, is preparing to compete in Group C of the tournament alongside Brazil national football team, Haiti national football team and Scotland national football team.

Morocco’s recent progress on the international stage has elevated expectations surrounding the national team, while the federation continues to build on the country’s growing football reputation.

The passing of a former federation president during such a significant period for Moroccan football is likely to prompt reflection on the administrative figures who helped shape the sport in the country over recent decades.

Fassi Fihri’s role at the head of the federation ensured his place within the history of Moroccan football administration, and the federation’s statement highlighted the respect still held for him within the organisation.

As condolences continue to be offered, Moroccan football enters a period of mourning while continuing preparations for one of the most important international competitions in the country’s football history.
