DR Congo targets smooth World Cup campaign with diplomatic push

DR Congo has intensified preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with government officials holding high-level talks to coordinate travel and logistics for the national team’s delegation to North America.

Officials from the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs met representatives of the United States and Canadian embassies in Kinshasa on April 21.

This is part of efforts to ensure a smooth trip for the Leopards during the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico between June 11 and July 19.

The meeting brought together Sports Minister Didier Budimbu and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Noëlla Ayeganagato Nakwipone, alongside diplomatic representatives, as authorities continue to fine-tune arrangements for the team and its accompanying delegation.

This coordinated approach reflects the significance of the moment for DR Congo, with the Leopards returning to the World Cup for the first time in 52 years.

Their only previous appearance came in 1974, making this qualification a historic milestone for the nation.

DR Congo have been drawn in Group K, where they will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the opening phase of the competition.

As part of their preparations, Houston, Texas, has been selected as the team’s base camp. The city will serve as the Leopards’ operational hub throughout the tournament, providing facilities for training, accommodation, and team activities.

Ahead of the competition, the Congolese embassy in the United States has already carried out a technical mission in Houston.

This included inspecting potential venues for fan engagement, such as areas designated for a Fan Festival, to ensure they meet the needs of the Congolese community expected to travel for the tournament.

Authorities have also outlined plans to use these fan zones as platforms to showcase Congolese culture on the global stage.

Music, arts, and economic opportunities are expected to feature prominently, with discussions ongoing with local organisers to maximise visibility.

Meanwhile, the government has issued a strong warning to the public over potential scams linked to World Cup travel.

Minister Budimbu stressed that supporters selected to accompany the team would not be required to pay any fees.

“All costs, including tickets, accommodation, and transportation, would be fully covered by the Congolese government,” he indicated, urging vigilance against fraudulent schemes targeting fans online.

The warning comes amid growing excitement among supporters following the team’s qualification, which has generated widespread enthusiasm across the country.

With logistical planning now underway and diplomatic coordination in place, DR Congo is aiming to ensure that both the team and its supporters are well prepared for the global tournament.
