Borussia Dortmund are preparing to commit to the long-term future of highly rated defender Ilyes Benkara, with the club expected to offer the 18-year-old his first professional contract. Benkara, whose current deal is due to expire at the end of the season, had been facing the prospect of becoming a free agent. However, the Bundesliga side have now taken steps to retain the player, signalling their confidence in his development and long-term potential. Contract extension planned According to reports from German outlet Bild, Dortmund intend to extend Benkara’s contract until 2029. The proposed agreement would secure his services for an additional three years and formally promote him into the club’s professional ranks. The decision reflects the club’s internal assessment of Benkara as one of their most promising young defenders. It is also expected to provide him with opportunities to feature more regularly with the senior squad next season, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate his readiness at the highest level. Progress through youth system Benkara joined Dortmund’s academy in 2021 from Mainz 05 and has since progressed steadily through the club’s youth structure. While he has been included in first-team squads on several occasions this season, he has yet to make his official senior debut. His competitive appearances have instead come for the club’s youth and reserve teams, where he has featured 19 times across various competitions, contributing one assist. Standing at 1.91 metres, the defender has drawn attention for his physical presence and potential, attributes that have marked him out as a player to watch within Dortmund’s development system. Interest from across Europe Dortmund’s move to secure Benkara’s future also appears designed to fend off interest from other European clubs. Recent reports have linked him with potential moves to Eintracht Frankfurt, Feyenoord and RSC Anderlecht. By progressing towards a new contract, Dortmund are effectively closing the door on those suitors, underlining their intention to integrate the player into their long-term plans. International ambitions with Algeria Although born in Germany in 2007, Benkara has already made a significant decision regarding his international career. Having previously represented Germany at youth level, he opted in 2025 to switch allegiance to Algeria national team. He received his first senior call-up in November, though he did not feature on the pitch. He remained on the bench during a friendly match against Zimbabwe and missed a subsequent fixture against Saudi Arabia due to illness. Despite not being expected to play a role in Algeria’s squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, Benkara is widely regarded as a key figure for the future of the national team’s defence.
