Barcelona maintained their impressive start to the Spanish league season with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, but Lamine Yamal’s decision to shoot rather than pass to a better-positioned team-mate has raised questions about his contribution to the club’s collective approach.
Raphinha and Fermin Lopez scored at Camp Nou as Barcelona secured their second successive victory and moved to the top of the Spanish league.
The scoreline, however, did little to reflect Barcelona’s dominance. Hansi Flick’s side controlled the match and created numerous opportunities, with Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon producing an outstanding performance to keep the margin down.
Simon made eight saves, including six from inside the penalty area, while Barcelona also struck the woodwork twice.
Barcelona registered four clear-cut chances and recorded an expected goals figure of 4.23, compared with only 0.25 for Athletic Bilbao.
Despite their failure to score more, the performance again demonstrated Barcelona’s ability to create sustained attacking pressure without a recognised centre-forward.
For Yamal, however, the evening represented another mixed performance.
The Spain international failed to score or provide an assist for the second consecutive match, despite repeatedly finding himself in dangerous positions.
Yamal chooses individual option
One particular incident highlighted the contrast between individual ambition and Barcelona’s collective approach.
In Barcelona’s previous match against Elche, Anthony Gordon had been presented with a promising opportunity inside the penalty area.
Gordon and Fermin Lopez had raced towards the opposition goalkeeper, with the Englishman having the option of attempting to finish the move himself.
Instead, he chose to pass to Lopez, allowing his team-mate to score from a much easier position.
Against Athletic, a similar situation developed, but with a different outcome.
This time Yamal and Gordon found themselves through on goal with the ball at Yamal’s feet.
Gordon moved into an excellent position and appeared ready to receive a pass that would have left him with a one-on-one opportunity against Simon.
Yamal instead decided to attempt the finish himself.
His shot was stopped by Simon, bringing the attack to an end and denying Gordon what appeared to be a significantly better scoring opportunity.
The decision was particularly notable because Gordon had only recently demonstrated the opposite approach by sacrificing his own chance to create a goal for a team-mate.
The incident has therefore been interpreted as an example of the different approaches taken by the two players.
Gordon’s decision against Elche prioritised the team’s attacking outcome, while Yamal’s choice against Athletic ultimately ended with neither a goal nor an assist.
Yamal attempts to make amends
Yamal did have an opportunity to correct his earlier decision during the second half.
In the 71st minute, the winger played Gordon through with a pass that put the Englishman in a one-on-one situation with Simon.
Gordon, however, could not take advantage of the opportunity and his shot went wide.
The move showed an improvement in Yamal’s willingness to involve his team-mate, although the chance ultimately went unused.
Yamal continued to find space in dangerous areas as the match progressed and improved considerably after the interval.
His overall performance suggested that he was gradually rediscovering the form Barcelona supporters have come to expect from him.
Yamal still searching for his best form
The 20-year-old’s struggles in front of goal have come during a period in which his form has been questioned.
The winger has been attempting to regain his best level since the World Cup and the beginning of the new season, and his desire to make an individual impact appears to have influenced some of his decisions in front of goal.
Against Athletic, Yamal had two clear opportunities to score but was denied by Simon, who was one of the outstanding performers on the pitch.
The Athletic goalkeeper’s interventions were particularly impressive given that he was facing his Spanish international team-mate.
Yamal nevertheless became increasingly influential in the second half, repeatedly moving into threatening positions and showing flashes of the quality that has made him such an important part of Barcelona’s attack.
His difficulty was not necessarily his ability to create danger, but what he did when those opportunities arrived.
At times, his final decision and finishing appeared driven by a desire to claim a goal for himself rather than maximise Barcelona’s chance of scoring.
That distinction could become increasingly important as Barcelona’s season develops.
Flick’s side have already demonstrated that they can create a large number of chances without relying on a conventional striker. Their attacking system depends heavily on movement, combination play and players making decisions that benefit the team as a whole.
Yamal’s improvement in the second half was therefore encouraging, but his earlier decision against Athletic showed there is still room for development in his understanding of when to prioritise the collective over individual success.
Barcelona ultimately secured the three points comfortably, with Raphinha and Fermin Lopez ensuring another positive result.
For Yamal, however, the victory offered a reminder that his greatest contribution may not always come from scoring himself. Sometimes, as Gordon demonstrated in the previous match, the most valuable decision is the one that gives a team-mate the best possible chance.
