The Confederation of African Football is considering disciplinary measures against Espérance de Tunis following controversial remarks made by head coach Patrice Beaumelle in the aftermath of their Champions League elimination.
Esperance were knocked out of the competition after losing both legs of their tie against Mamelodi Sundowns by identical 1-0 scorelines, bringing their campaign to an end. However, the focus has since shifted away from the result itself and towards events surrounding the second leg.
Refereeing Decisions at Centre of Dispute
Beaumelle publicly criticised the decision to appoint Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan for the decisive fixture, raising concerns about officiating standards. The coach argued that a penalty awarded to Sundowns during the match was incorrect, a claim that has intensified scrutiny on the officiating.
His comments have reportedly triggered a response from CAF’s disciplinary structures, with the governing body now reviewing both the statements and incidents linked to the match.
Possible Sanctions for Coach and Player
According to reports, CAF’s disciplinary committee is preparing to assess potential sanctions not only against Beaumelle but also against Esperance player Aboubacar Diakite.
African journalist Micky Jnr indicated that the coach is likely to be the primary focus of any disciplinary action due to the nature of his post-match remarks, which directly questioned refereeing decisions.
Meanwhile, Diakite could also face punishment following an incident at the end of the match. It is alleged that the player kicked the ball towards the assistant referee after the final whistle, an act that may be deemed unsporting conduct under CAF regulations.
Investigation Underway
CAF is expected to conduct a comprehensive review process before reaching any final conclusions. This will include analysis of match footage as well as examination of statements made in the media following the game.
The governing body’s approach reflects its broader efforts to uphold disciplinary standards and ensure respect for match officials across African competitions.
Decision Pending as Scrutiny Intensifies
With tensions still high following Esperance’s exit, the case now rests with CAF’s disciplinary committee. The outcome could have implications not only for those directly involved but also for how similar incidents are handled in the future.
As the investigation continues, both Beaumelle and Diakite await clarity on whether their actions will result in formal sanctions, in what has become one of the most closely watched disciplinary situations in recent African club football.
