Burkina Faso continue their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a high-profile friendly against Russia on Friday at the Volgograd Arena, as head coach Amir Abdou looks to further shape a new-look squad.
The match, scheduled for 17:00 GMT, marks the first-ever meeting between both nations and forms part of a demanding European double-header for the Stallions, who will also face Belarus on 9 June in Minsk.
For Burkina Faso, the fixture represents an important step in assessing progress under Abdou, who is preparing for only his third match in charge of the national team since his appointment in March 2026.
The encounter comes at a time of transition for the West African side, with the coach introducing new players and reshaping the squad in a bid to strengthen competition and depth across all departments.
Abdou has named a 25-man squad for the two friendlies, including four new call-ups, with a particular focus on defensive reinforcements.
Several key players have also been recalled after periods of absence, as the technical team seeks to strike a balance between experience and fresh talent.
The aim of the current international window is to test Burkina Faso against European opposition, offering a different tactical and physical challenge compared to their usual African opponents.
The matches are expected to provide valuable insight ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, where Burkina Faso have been drawn in a competitive group alongside Benin, Mauritania and the Central African Republic.
Preparations for the fixtures began in Ouagadougou on 22 May 2026 at the Stade du 4 Août, where a reduced group of 11 players reported for early training sessions.
The initial camp was designed to ensure all players reached similar fitness levels following the conclusion of domestic seasons.
The training camp concluded at the end of May before the squad departed for Russia to complete final preparations.
Abdou has placed emphasis on intensity, tactical organisation and team cohesion throughout the build-up.
The coaching staff believe that facing disciplined and physically strong European sides such as Russia will be crucial in identifying strengths and weaknesses within the squad.
The broader objective is to refine playing patterns, integrate new players into the system, and build a more competitive team capable of challenging in upcoming continental qualifiers.
While results will be important, Burkina Faso’s technical team views these fixtures primarily as developmental tests, with a focus on long-term progress rather than immediate outcomes.
