AJEL stumble as title race tightens in Senegal

The 23rd round of the Senegal Ligue 1 delivered a dramatic twist at the top of the table, as AJEL Rufisque suffered a surprise defeat that has reopened the title race.

Heading into the weekend, AJEL appeared to be cruising towards the title, boasting a strong lead and an impressive unbeaten away record. However, that run came to an abrupt end with a 2-0 loss to Dakar SC.

The hosts made their intentions clear early on, with Fara Mendy opening the scoring in the 10th minute. The game tilted further in Dakar SC’s favour just before halftime when AJEL striker Mouhamed Diop was sent off, leaving the league leaders with ten men for the entire second half.

After the break, Moussa Paye sealed the victory with a second goal in the 49th minute, handing AJEL a rare setback at a crucial stage of the season.

US Gorée fail to capitalise

AJEL’s slip presented a golden opportunity for second-placed US Gorée to close the gap at the top.

The island side came into their clash against ASC Jaraaf aiming for a third consecutive victory, which would have significantly tightened the race for the title.

However, Gorée were unable to break down their opponents, settling for a frustrating 0-0 draw at home.

The result means they remain three points behind AJEL, with 40 points compared to the leaders’ 43—missing a crucial chance to apply real pressure in the standings.

Génération Foot boost momentum

Elsewhere, Génération Foot continued their strong run of form with a narrow 1-0 victory over Sonacos.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute, when Amady Bâ Niamadio found the back of the net to secure all three points.

The win marks Génération Foot’s second consecutive victory and further boosts their position, while simultaneously deepening Sonacos’ struggles near the relegation zone.

Title race still wide open

With the remainder of Matchday 23 set to be completed between Sunday and Monday, the title race remains finely balanced.

Third-placed Teungueth FC still have the opportunity to close the gap when they face bottom-side AS Cambérène. A victory would bring them within four points of the summit, adding another layer of pressure at the top.

Other fixtures to watch include Casa Sports against Guédiawaye FC, as well as home games for Wally Daan against US Ouakam and AS Pikine versus Linguère.

With just a few rounds remaining, AJEL’s stumble has injected fresh life into the championship race. What once looked like a straightforward march to the title has now become a tense battle, with multiple teams still sensing an opportunity to strike.
