Liverpool FC defender Joe Gomez has suggested he could leave the club this summer, admitting he is uncertain about his future as he enters the final year of his contract.
The 28-year-old spoke openly about his situation amid growing expectations that Liverpool could undergo major changes ahead of the 2026-27 season. The Premier League champions are already preparing for the departures of key figures including Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson, with Gomez now becoming the latest senior player linked with an exit from Anfield.
Questions surrounding Gomez’s long-term future have intensified following a decline in his playing time over the past two seasons. The England international has started only six Premier League matches in each of the last two campaigns, as competition for places in Liverpool’s defence increased under manager Arne Slott.
Speaking about the possibility of leaving during the upcoming transfer window, Gomez admitted he remains unsure about what lies ahead.
“I think anything can happen; honestly I don’t know what will happen. I only have one year left on my contract, so I don’t know, but what is meant to happen will happen.”
The defender also reflected emotionally on his lengthy spell with the club.
“I am extremely grateful for all the moments I have experienced here within this club. I will always be grateful to have spent 11 years in a place like this. All I can do is feel grateful, and then we will see what happens next.”
Gomez’s comments come at a time when Liverpool are reshaping their defensive options. The club recently strengthened its back line with the arrivals of young defenders Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet. They join an already competitive defensive unit featuring established centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
The increased competition has made Gomez’s position within the squad less secure, despite his long-standing importance to the club. Injuries and tactical changes have also contributed to his reduced role in recent seasons.
Since arriving from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Gomez has enjoyed one of the most successful periods in Liverpool’s modern history. Over 11 years at Anfield, he has made 272 appearances in all competitions and collected every major trophy available.
His honours include two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League trophy, the FA Cup and two League Cups, making him one of the club’s most decorated players of the recent era.
Liverpool’s hierarchy could now face a significant decision regarding the defender’s future. With only one year remaining on his current deal, the club may consider selling Gomez during the summer transfer window rather than risk losing him for free later.
No agreement over a contract extension has yet been announced, leaving uncertainty over whether Gomez will remain part of Liverpool’s next chapter or bring an end to a career at Anfield that has spanned more than a decade.
