Manchester City rally to reach FA cup final after late comeback

Manchester City kept their hopes of a domestic treble alive with a late comeback victory over Southampton, securing a 2-1 win to book their place in the FA Cup final.

The semi-final, played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening, appeared to be heading in Southampton’s favour before a dramatic turnaround in the closing stages saw City overturn the deficit and progress.

Late drama turns the tie

After a largely balanced contest, Southampton broke the deadlock in the 79th minute through Fin Azaze, who struck a powerful right-footed effort from outside the penalty area, beating the City goalkeeper to give his side a surprise lead.

However, the advantage lasted only four minutes. Jeremy Doku levelled the score in the 83rd minute, finishing from inside the box with a right-footed shot that restored parity and shifted momentum firmly in City’s favour.

The decisive moment came in the 87th minute when Nico Gonzalez produced a superb strike from outside the area, finding the net to complete the comeback and send City into the final.

Marmoush plays key role

Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush started the match and contributed to City’s attacking efforts before being substituted in the 71st minute. He was replaced by Erling Haaland as City sought to increase their attacking intensity in pursuit of a result.

While Marmoush did not score, his involvement in the starting line-up highlighted his growing role within the squad during a crucial phase of the season.

Treble ambitions remain intact

The victory ensures Manchester City remain on course for a domestic treble. They have already secured the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Arsenal, and now stand one step away from lifting the FA Cup.

City are also firmly in contention for the Premier League title. With 70 points, they currently sit top of the table, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, underlining their consistency across competitions this season.

Final opponents yet to be decided

City will face the winner of the semi-final between Chelsea and Leeds United, who meet on Sunday evening to determine the second finalist.

With momentum on their side, City will now turn their attention back to league action, where they are set to travel to Everton on May 4 in what could be another pivotal fixture in the title race.

City show resilience at decisive moment

Manchester City’s comeback at Wembley demonstrated both resilience and attacking quality at a crucial stage of the season. With silverware already secured and two major prizes still within reach, their ambitions remain firmly intact. The ability to recover under pressure may prove decisive as they pursue further success in the weeks ahead.
