Iran striker Mehdi Taremi has emphasised the importance of unity, discipline and mental strength as Team Melli prepare for their decisive Group G encounter against Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iran head into the crucial fixture knowing qualification for the Round of 32 remains within reach following a 2-2 draw against New Zealand and a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate with Belgium. However, with the group finely balanced, victory against Egypt is now viewed as the clearest route to securing progression.
Speaking to FIFA’s official website, Taremi reflected on Iran’s performance against Belgium, admitting the result left the team with mixed emotions after they were unable to take full advantage of key moments during the match.
“It was clear that we adopted a more defensive plan in this match compared to the current circumstances, and we were hoping to come away with a point,” Taremi said.
“We were under slight pressure at the beginning of the match, but after about 20 to 30 minutes, our performance improved and we were able to show our abilities on the field.”
The experienced forward explained that Iran gradually gained confidence and control as the match progressed, creating opportunities that could have changed the outcome.
“In the second half, we started with a more attacking style. After the red card, the course of the game changed completely. We could have achieved a better result, but we did not have enough focus to win.”
Looking ahead to the encounter with Egypt, Taremi insisted that the team’s success will depend not only on tactical execution but also on the collective spirit surrounding the national side.
“The matter has now become extremely important, and the most important factor for qualification is the unity and solidarity between the players, the coaching staff, and the Iranian people all over the world,” he said.
“We have established this solidarity through football, and the greatest joy of qualifying is the increasing closeness of our people.”
Taremi acknowledged the pressure facing the squad, particularly younger players experiencing the demands of a World Cup campaign for the first time.
“The promotion has not yet been achieved, and this may affect the football careers of many young Iranian players, but for me, unity and solidarity is more important than anything else.”
The Olympiacos striker also highlighted the physical challenges created by the tournament schedule, including extensive travel between host cities and limited recovery periods between matches.
“These circumstances are extremely difficult from both a technical and professional standpoint. Such travel reduces recovery time and increases the pressure on the players’ bodies,” he explained.
Despite those challenges, Taremi remains confident that Iran can rise to the occasion and deliver a performance capable of securing qualification.
“Our duty is to make the Iranian people happy. All our focus is on this matter,” he said.
“I hope we win the match against Egypt and achieve qualification for the next round.”
With a place in the knockout stages hanging in the balance, Iran’s meeting with Egypt promises to be one of the defining matches in Group G, as Taremi and his teammates look to transform resilience, unity and determination into World Cup progression.
