World Cup 2026: Iran national team squad – Team Melli seek breakthrough amid pressure and Taremi-led attack in North America
Iran arrive at the 2026 World Cup with renewed determination to finally break their long-standing barrier of group-stage exits, as they head into a tournament charged with added tension following strained relations with hosts the United States.
Despite the external backdrop, Amir Ghalenoei’s side believe their unity, discipline, and improved qualification form give them a genuine opportunity to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
Strong qualification campaign
Iran secured direct qualification from the Asian section after finishing top of Group A, collecting 23 points from 10 matches against Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan and North Korea.
Their consistency across the campaign reinforced their status as one of Asia’s most reliable sides, combining defensive organisation with efficient attacking play to control their group.
World Cup history of frustration
Iran have appeared at six previous World Cups — in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 — but have never progressed beyond the group stage.
Their best performances have consistently fallen just short, leaving them still searching for a defining breakthrough on the global stage despite decades of progress in Asian football.
Ghalenoei’s pragmatic approach
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei, who returned for a second spell in March 2023, has brought stability and results, even if his cautious tactical style has divided opinion.
The 62-year-old is known for prioritising structure and defensive discipline over expansive attacking football, a philosophy that has delivered qualification but has yet to be tested at the knockout level of a World Cup.
Taremi remains focal point
Up front, much of Iran’s hopes rest on Mehdi Taremi, whose experience and goal-scoring instinct continue to make him their most important attacking threat.
The 33-year-old striker, who previously maintained prolific form at Porto and later regained rhythm at Olympiakos, offers movement, aerial strength and finishing ability that Iran will rely on in tight group matches.
He is expected to be central to their ambitions of finally progressing beyond the opening stage.
Fixtures and challenge ahead
Iran face a demanding but navigable group in North America, beginning with New Zealand on 16 June, before meetings with Belgium and Egypt.
While Belgium are widely seen as favourites, Iran believe their organisation and tournament discipline could prove decisive in what may be a tightly contested battle for second place.
Outlook
Iran enter the tournament as a side defined by resilience and structure, but still searching for a historic breakthrough.
For Ghalenoei and his squad, the task is clear: convert consistency into progress — and finally move beyond the group stage at a World Cup.
