Diomandé stakes his claim at Real Madrid as Vinicius struggles

Yan Diomandé has strengthened his case for a more prominent role at Real Madrid after recording three goals and three assists in his last four matches, putting pressure on Vinicius Jr amid the Brazilian’s recent struggles in front of goal.

The Ivory Coast international continued his impressive run with a goal and an assist in Real Madrid’s 4-1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.

Diomandé’s latest contribution came after he replaced Vinicius in the 70th minute, setting up Kylian Mbappé in the 83rd minute before scoring himself four minutes later.

His growing influence has raised the prospect of a change in the attacking hierarchy at the Spanish club, particularly as Vinicius continues to search for his best form.

Real Madrid have maintained their perfect record in the Champions League, with victories over RB Leipzig, Inter and Roma among their results in the competition.

Diomandé’s performances have been a notable feature of the team’s recent progress, with the forward producing a series of decisive contributions since returning from international duty with Ivory Coast.

Diomandé’s impressive run

The 10 October meeting with Villarreal marked an important moment in the Ivorian’s recent resurgence. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory, helping José Mourinho’s side recover from a 2-1 defeat by Atlético de Madrid.

He continued his form against Roma the following week, providing an assist for Mbappé in a match Real Madrid lost 4-3.

Diomandé then delivered another influential performance against Sevilla, scoring once and creating a goal in a 4-1 victory over the Spanish side.

His display against RB Leipzig extended that sequence, with his late introduction proving particularly productive. The winger’s ability to score and create chances has made him an increasingly significant option in Real Madrid’s attack.

Following Wednesday’s match, Diomandé also appeared to enjoy the comparison between his goal and one scored by teammate Arda Güler.

Asked about the two efforts, he said: « Mon but et celui d’Arda 🇹🇷 ? Arda est un meilleur joueur MAIS MON BUT EST PLUS BEAU (🤣). »

The comment reflected his confidence during a period in which his performances have attracted increasing attention.

Vinicius under pressure

While Diomandé’s influence has grown, Vinicius has struggled to produce goals consistently for Real Madrid.

The Brazilian has not scored for the club since 26 August, when he found the net against Real Sociedad. His record in La Liga stands at one goal and three assists, while he has yet to register a goal or an assist in the Champions League.

Those figures represent a decline from the standards he demonstrated in 2024 and contrast with Diomandé’s recent effectiveness.

The difference in their current form could create a selection dilemma for Mourinho as he considers his attacking options.

Vinicius remains an established figure at Real Madrid, but Diomandé’s recent performances have given the coach another option capable of influencing matches through both goalscoring and creativity.

Wednesday’s match offered a particularly clear illustration of that contrast. Vinicius was withdrawn in the 70th minute, and Diomandé quickly made his presence felt with his assist for Mbappé and a goal of his own.

Mourinho will be encouraged by the Ivorian’s ability to make an immediate impact, especially as Real Madrid continue to compete in domestic and European football.

A growing challenge for Madrid’s attack

Diomandé’s recent run has strengthened his argument for more regular involvement, with his six goal contributions across four matches highlighting his current effectiveness.

His challenge now will be to maintain that consistency and turn his recent performances into a sustained presence in the starting line-up.

For Real Madrid, the competition between the two attackers could provide Mourinho with greater flexibility as the season progresses.

Vinicius will be looking to rediscover his scoring touch, while Diomandé has an opportunity to build on his impressive form and establish himself as a more influential figure at the Bernabéu.

With the Ivorian delivering decisive contributions and the Brazilian searching for a response, the battle for attacking prominence at Real Madrid has become an increasingly important storyline.
