Wydad Athletic Club have appointed Mohamed Benchrifa as head coach following the dismissal of Patrice Carteron after a disappointing run of results.
The decision, led by club president Hicham Ait Menna, comes as part of an urgent attempt to stabilise the team’s performances amid growing dissatisfaction among supporters.
Benchrifa takes over with immediate effect, bringing in a locally based technical team that includes Hamouda Benchrifa, Youssef Achami, Tariq Jarmouni and Idriss Wajou.
The appointment signals a shift towards a coaching structure familiar with the club’s internal environment and culture, as Wydad seek to address both on-field struggles and off-field tensions.
Carteron’s exit follows a brief spell in charge during which results failed to improve. The French coach had been brought in to replace Mohamed Amine Benhachem after the team’s elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.
However, under his leadership, Wydad recorded just two draws and three defeats in five matches, a run that increased pressure on both the coaching staff and club management.
The managerial change comes at a time of heightened unrest, with supporters openly expressing frustration over the club’s direction and leadership decisions.
Criticism has been directed at the administration, with concerns raised about both strategic choices and performances on the pitch.
Benchrifa now inherits a challenging situation, with the team struggling for consistency and confidence at a crucial stage of the season.
His immediate task will be to restore stability within the squad while also addressing the expectations of a demanding fan base.
With pressure mounting and patience limited, Wydad’s leadership will be hoping the change delivers a swift improvement in results.
The coming weeks are likely to prove decisive, as Benchrifa begins his tenure under close scrutiny, tasked with reviving the club’s campaign and re-establishing momentum.
