World Cup 2026: South Africa national team squad – Bafana Bafana return to global stage after 16-year wait

South Africa will return to the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years after ending a prolonged absence from football’s biggest stage, with Hugo Broos guiding Bafana Bafana to qualification for the 2026 tournament in North America.

Having failed to reach each of the previous three World Cups, South Africa arrive with renewed optimism after an impressive qualifying campaign and growing belief that they can make history by progressing beyond the group stage for the first time.

Expectations in North America

The wait is finally over for South African football supporters.

Bafana Bafana’s most recent World Cup appearance came when they hosted the tournament in 2010, while their last qualification through the traditional route was achieved in 2002. Since then, the national team has endured years of frustration, near misses and rebuilding projects.

Under Belgian coach Hugo Broos, however, South Africa have rediscovered momentum and secured a place among the world’s elite nations once again.

The memories of the 2010 World Cup remain vivid, from the sound of the vuvuzelas to the unforgettable opening-goal strike by Siphiwe Tshabalala. Sixteen years later, a new generation of players has the opportunity to create its own chapter in South African football history.

There is also growing confidence following the success of domestic giants Mamelodi Sundowns, whose adventurous style won admirers during the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. South Africa hope to carry that same fearless approach onto the global stage.

Their World Cup journey, however, has not been without complications.

A qualifying victory over Lesotho was later overturned after midfielder Teboho Mokoena was fielded despite being ineligible through suspension. The administrative error briefly threatened to derail South Africa’s campaign and kept qualification hopes hanging in the balance until the final round of matches.

South Africa’s opponents at the 2026 World Cup

Drawn alongside Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea, South Africa face a challenging group that will test both their discipline and resilience.

Broos’ side demonstrated consistency and quality throughout qualification, but the coach will be equally determined to ensure off-field distractions do not undermine their chances in North America.

Qualifying round results

South Africa secured qualification for their fourth FIFA World Cup by finishing top of Group C in the African qualifying campaign.

They recorded five victories, three draws and two defeats during a fiercely contested campaign that featured strong challenges from Nigeria and Benin.

The race for qualification went down to the final matchday. South Africa began the decisive round in second place and knew victory against Rwanda was essential.

A convincing 3-0 home win gave Bafana Bafana hope, but qualification was not yet guaranteed. Attention then turned to Nigeria’s meeting with Benin, where the Super Eagles’ emphatic 4-0 victory ultimately helped South Africa finish top of the group and secure their place at the World Cup.

Previous World Cup performance

The 2026 tournament will mark South Africa’s fourth appearance at a FIFA World Cup.

Despite participating on three previous occasions, Bafana Bafana have never advanced beyond the group stage.

Across nine World Cup matches, South Africa have recorded two wins, four draws and three defeats, scoring 11 goals and conceding 16.

The challenge in North America will be to surpass that record and reach the knockout rounds for the first time.

Coach Broos wants to lead South Africa beyond the group stage for the first time

Hugo Broos has been widely credited with transforming the fortunes of the national team since his appointment in May 2021.

The Belgian arrived shortly after South Africa narrowly missed qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations and immediately began reshaping the squad.

Several young players, including Thalente Mbatha, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa, were handed opportunities and have since become key figures in the team’s revival.

Broos also oversaw South Africa’s impressive third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that restored confidence in the national setup.

Yet the former Cameroon coach has made clear that his primary objective is the World Cup, where he hopes to guide South Africa beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

South Africas solid foundation

South Africa’s solid foundation

Much of the spotlight may fall on forward Lyle Foster, but South Africa’s most influential player remains captain Ronwen Williams.

The experienced goalkeeper has established himself as one of Africa’s finest shot-stoppers and earned international recognition for his remarkable penalty-saving record.

Williams has also enjoyed sustained success with Mamelodi Sundowns, collecting multiple domestic honours and playing a central role in one of the continent’s most dominant clubs.

His leadership, composure and experience will be crucial if South Africa are to compete successfully against higher-ranked opponents.

For a team built on organisation and discipline, Williams provides the foundation upon which Bafana Bafana’s World Cup ambitions rest.
