West Ham moved to within one point of Championship leaders Swansea City after a 1-0 victory, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo saying his team are continuing to build momentum.
The result lifted the Hammers into second place in the league, behind Swansea, who remain top despite the defeat.
Divine Mukasa scored the only goal of the game, finishing from close to the penalty spot after being found by a clever pass from Mohamadou Kante.
The match was closely contested, with West Ham narrowly ahead in expected goals, 1.2 to 1.0. Swansea had 11 attempts but did not manage a single shot on target.
Set-pieces provided most of Swansea’s attacking threat, accounting for 0.9 of their expected goals, but Nuno was satisfied with the overall display from his side.
“I think the players did a very good job. Overall, a very good performance, organised, creating chances, also we had luck in moments,” Nuno told BBC Radio London.
“Swansea are a very good team; they are fast, dynamic, it’s not easy to control them, but overall I think we were organised and caused a lot of problems too.
“It was a very entertaining game, very intense; it was a nice football match.”
The West Ham manager also praised Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux, who made several important saves.
“There were some amazing saves, maybe because of my past [as a goalkeeper] I always credit them, but they were some amazing saves [from Lawrence Vigouroux],” he said.
Although the league position is significant, Nuno said West Ham’s focus remained on improving their performances.
“I think we are building momentum. The table is important but more important is how we keep improving. I still believe there are a lot of things we should have done better.”
Elsewhere in the Championship, Middlesbrough missed the chance to move into first place after drawing 2-2 with Cardiff City.
Cardiff held a 2-0 lead at half-time, but Middlesbrough recovered after the interval as Tommy Conway and Will Lankshear scored to secure a point for Boro.
