Werder Bremen remain coy on future of in demand Ivorian Coulibaly

Werder Bremen have remained tight-lipped over the future of their rising Ivorian-German defender Abdoul Karim Coulibaly, amid growing interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Coulibaly, who has quickly established himself as a key centre-back for Bremen in the Bundesliga, is reportedly being tracked by some of the continent’s biggest teams, including Olympique de Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Newcastle, Napoli, and most recently Real Madrid.

His performances this season, combining composure, physicality, and an ability to play out from the back, have made him one of Germany’s most highly rated young defenders.

In an interview with Kicker, Werder Bremen sporting director Peter Niemeyer addressed the speculation surrounding Coulibaly’s future, stressing that the club is aware of the ongoing interest but giving little away about possible transfer plans.

“We are aware that steps are being taken regarding this matter, but there is no indication at this time what the next steps will be or whether a transfer will take place this summer.

“It is clear that a player of his profile is generating considerable interest and attention,” Niemeyer said.

The 18-year-old, who hails from Oldenburg and is under contract with Bremen until June 2029, reportedly carries a price tag of between €40 and €50 million, although Transfermarkt currently values him at €22 million.

His rising profile has been bolstered by over 20 Bundesliga appearances this season, making him a regular starter despite his age.

Former Ivorian striker Amara Diané has commented on the player’s potential, suggesting that a move to a club like PSG would reflect “precocious maturity,” highlighting the early stage of Coulibaly’s career and the bold decisions that could shape his development.

Werder Bremen are now preparing for their 28th Bundesliga fixture against RB Leipzig, where Coulibaly is expected to continue playing a pivotal role as the team battles to maintain its position in the league.

His performances have already put African football on the European radar once more, showcasing the talent emerging from the continent.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the question remains whether Bremen will hold on to one of Europe’s most exciting defensive prospects, or will the teenager follow in the footsteps of other young African stars who have made early moves to top clubs.

For now, the club’s cautious approach signals that a decision has yet to be made.
