Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune has suggested Nigerian striker Victor Boniface could make a long-awaited return in this weekend’s decisive North German derby against Hamburger SV, offering a potential boost to a side battling to avoid relegation.
Boniface has been sidelined since December 2025 after sustaining a serious knee injury, which required surgery the following month. The forward, who is on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, only resumed individual training earlier in April after a lengthy rehabilitation period. His absence has coincided with a difficult spell for Bremen, who have struggled to find consistent goals without him.
Speaking before the match, Thioune indicated that Boniface’s return remains a possibility, although no final decision has been made.
“We’re not ruling any player out, not even Victor,” Thioune said as per Weser-Kurier.
“If we see an opportunity and he adapts, then it’s possible he’ll return to competitive action. I’m also reserving the right to assess his participation in tomorrow’s final training session.”
Despite the positive update, Thioune emphasised that Boniface is unlikely to start, with the focus instead on carefully managing his comeback after several months out. Any involvement would likely come from the bench as Bremen seek to reintegrate him without risking further injury.
The timing of his potential return could prove significant. Bremen head into the derby in 15th place on 28 points, just three points clear of the relegation play-off position. Recent results have increased the pressure, with the team losing three of their last four matches.
Hamburger SV, their opponents, are only marginally more secure. Sitting 12th with 31 points, they too remain in danger, particularly given their inconsistent performances in recent weeks. Defensive frailties have been a major concern, with Hamburg failing to keep a clean sheet in their last nine matches.
Bremen will look to exploit those weaknesses, with players such as Romano Schmid and Justin Njinmah expected to lead the attacking effort. However, the home side faces its own challenges, notably the absence of suspended captain Marco Friedl, which could leave gaps at the back.
The previous meeting between the two sides in December ended in a dramatic 3–2 victory for Hamburg, adding further intensity to an already fierce rivalry. With both clubs fighting for Bundesliga survival, the stakes for this encounter are particularly high.
Boniface’s possible return adds an extra dimension to the contest. Even a brief appearance could provide Bremen with a fresh attacking option and lift both teammates and supporters at a critical stage of the season.
As the campaign approaches its conclusion, the outcome of this derby could have significant implications for both sides. With relegation concerns looming, the match represents not only a historic rivalry but also a pivotal moment in the fight to remain in Germany’s top flight.
