Defending former champions South Africa will head into the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations determined to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite as Banyana Banyana prepare for another title challenge in Morocco.
The tournament, which begins on Sunday, July 26, brings together Africa’s leading women’s national teams, with South Africa aiming to build on their recent success under head coach Desiree Ellis.
Having lifted their maiden continental crown in 2022 with victory over hosts Morocco, Banyana Banyana remain one of Africa’s strongest sides.
Although they finished fourth at the most recent edition, Ellis’ squad will be looking to return to the top of African women’s football by capturing a second WAFCON title.
South Africa’s ambitions once again rest on a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with star forward Thembi Kgatlana expected to lead the attack alongside rising striker Nthabiseng Majiya.
The duo are widely regarded as two of the key figures capable of driving South Africa’s campaign as the team seeks another deep run in the competition.
The tournament also represents another opportunity for African women’s football to showcase its growing quality and competitiveness, with South Africa among the favourites expected to challenge for continental honours.
Ellis has assembled a balanced squad featuring experience across every department.
In goal, Banyana Banyana will rely on Andile Dlamini, Kaylin Swart and Katlego Moletsane to provide competition for the starting position.
The defensive unit includes Fikile Magama, Karabo Dhlamini, Bambani Mbane, Khutso Pila, Asanda Hadebe, Antonia Maponya and Lonathemba Mhlongo, offering depth as South Africa prepare for a demanding group campaign.
Midfield responsibilities will be shared by Bongeka Gamede, Linda Mothlalo, Refiloe Jane, Robyn Miidaly-Salgado, Isabela Ludwig, Amogelang Motau, Nonhlanhla Mthandi, Sibulele Holweni, Gabriela Moodaly-Salgado and Noxolo Cesane.
Up front, Kgatlana and Majiya are joined by Hilda Magaia, Bonolo Mokoma and Ronnel Donnelly as South Africa seek the goals needed to mount another successful title bid.
Banyana Banyana have been drawn into a competitive Group B and will begin their campaign against Tanzania on Monday, July 27, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 PM GMT.
Their second group match comes four days later when they face Ivory Coast at the same venue, again kicking off at 5:00 PM GMT.
South Africa will conclude the group stage against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, August 4, with that encounter scheduled for 8:00 PM GMT.
