Thiago Motta linked with Lyon job if Paulo Fonseca departs – reports

Thiago Motta could be appointed as Lyon’s next head coach if Paulo Fonseca leaves the club, according to Football Italia.

Fonseca’s future is uncertain despite Lyon sitting third in the French league after nine rounds. L’Equipe reports that the Portuguese coach has asked the club’s leadership to release him because he wants to take charge of Sporting in Lisbon.

Should Fonseca depart, Motta is understood to be among the candidates to replace him.

The Italian coach has been without a club since March 2025, when he left Juventus less than a year after being appointed. Before his move to Juventus, Motta enjoyed a successful spell at Bologna, guiding them to qualification for the Champions League at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Juventus officially terminated Motta’s contract at the beginning of June 2026. He is now free of any contractual obligations and able to begin work at a new club.
